The Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Poshan is a compilation of the words and deeds of the eminent monk Haiming of the Linji school during the Qing Dynasty. It was compiled by his disciples Yinzheng and others, with the chronological biography recorded by Yinluan and others, and edited by Yinyou and others. Chan Master Haiming lived during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, a period of social upheaval. He inherited and developed the style of the Linji school, renowned for his stern shouts and blows, as well as his straightforward and unadorned Chan approach. The recorded sayings encompass his teachings, Dharma discourses, dialogues of opportunity, and chronological biography, comprehensively presenting his Chan philosophy and practice. As a significant Chan text from the Ming-Qing transition, this work holds important value for the study of Linji lineage transmission, Ming-Qing Buddhist history, and Chan thought. It stands as one of the core scriptures for understanding the characteristics of Chan Buddhism during that era.
