### 示恆範禪人

> Instructions for Chan Practitioner Hengfan

禪和子樹精進幢、披忍辱鎧，無論凡之與聖、智之與愚、勞之與逸、生之與死，單單貴稟此心此志，將者些子恍惚處要明白、要究竟，決了終身之志，豈可浩浩來天地間，辜人負己，作一場虛生浪死人哉？若如此，則銅枷鐵鎖、鋒刀劍戟，無時不在、無時不臨，欲逃無地、欲竄無門，正所謂毫釐繫念三塗業因，瞥爾情生萬劫羈鎖。果是箇漢，向未舉念之先一覷破去，再來東塔門下索取艸鞋錢亦未遲在。

> Meditation practitioners should raise the banner of diligence and put on the armor of patience. Whether holy or ordinary, wise or foolish, diligent or idle, living or dying, what truly matters is to uphold this mind and this resolve—to illuminate those moments of confusion, to seek complete understanding, to fulfill a lifelong aspiration. How could one simply drift through the vast world between heaven and earth, betraying others and oneself, living aimlessly and dying without purpose? If one does this, then the copper cangue, iron locks, sharp blades, and swords are ever-present and always looming—there is no place to escape, no door to flee. Truly, "a single lingering thought becomes the cause of suffering in the three evil paths; a flash of emotional attachment becomes the shackle binding one for ten thousand kalpas." If you are truly a person of resolve, see through this before a single thought even arises—then you may come to East Pagoda's gate at leisure to pay for straw sandals.
