> Sitting in meditation is the fundamental duty of us monks. How could we rely on literary skill, cleverness, or novelty—uttering polished phrases and playing with set patterns? Boasting of our abilities to fuel conversation, raising eyebrows and blinking eyes to feign sharp wit? If so, it is truly like a dog chasing a clod of earth. But if you are a true lion cub, you only seek to devour others. Yet this "devouring" is precisely cutting straight to the root, not chasing after fragments. Recently, I often see those who practice Chan neglecting this very essence, first filling their bellies with learning before turning to Chan. Do they not understand what Chan truly means? Its purpose is to transcend names and forms, to go beyond mental constructs, to leave behind the four propositions and negate all dualities. How could it be about following misguided paths, ignoring the true meaning, mistaking fish eyes for pearls, or treating magnetic stones as treasures? To go about flaunting donkey lips and horse mouths, waving sticks and shouting at clouds as if that were the ultimate? Such entanglements only point to the sickness of Chan. If Chan were without sickness, why would one need to practice it? You are already it—yet even this still involves subtle clinging. It is like conferring a sage’s rank upon an ordinary person, or like throwing a sword into the air—whether it hits or misses matters not; what is valued is simply taking it up.
