> Instructions for the Vacuous Precept Holder

受戒之後務要堅遠大志，以生死為極，則二六時中看生從何來、死從何去。若會得生之來處，死處亦明，忽然情忘見絕，即是真持戒、真了生死人也。勉之。

> After receiving the precepts, you must firmly nurture a profound aspiration, making the matter of life and death your ultimate concern. In every moment of the day, observe: where does life come from, and where does death go? If you truly understand the source of life, then the nature of death will also become clear. When your clinging thoughts and views suddenly vanish completely, that is when you become a true holder of the precepts, a true person who has seen through birth and death. Strive for this.
