> Master Minglübo, the Elder, was asked by the Zen Master Ruoan of Luoyang to establish a Water and Land Great Assembly in response to the request of the seven assemblies of practitioners. He ascended the seat, and a monk asked: "When the blue seas are kicked over, the great earth's dust flies; when the white clouds are dispersed with a shout, empty space is shattered. Now, for the deliverance of the beings of the water and land, the dark and hidden realms—where should they settle their bodies and establish their lives?" The Master said: "At the top of the banner pole, the lotus heart looks upward." The monk pressed further: "If so, then where the staff's tip points, it shines bright as the sun. Burned in the censer, how many know it?" The Master said: "Fortunately, the acharya shares in the witness." The monk asked: "What is the realm of Gold Mountain?" The Master said: "In the blazing heat of a fiery day, a single flake of snow flies." The monk asked: "What of the person within that realm?" The Master said: "Sweat falls like rain, drenching and drenching." The monk asked: "Standing alone on the summit of ten thousand fathoms, letting go and returning from the top of a hundred-foot pole—what is the summit of ten thousand fathoms?" The Master said: "Sword Pavilion rises a thousand fathoms high; the night traveler does not know it." The monk said: "In the heavens, every star bows to the North; on earth, every river flows to the East." The Master said: "You're going off again like that." Then he spoke: "The entire world is a jeweled royal throne. Every mote of dust, every atom-land, fully revealed before the eyes. Through countless kalpas, just this indestructible true body—vivid and clear, with no obstruction or covering. Riding this seat, resting in this body, with compassion he saves the four kinds of beings, serving as ladder and boat for the nine realms of existence. Therefore it is said: gods, humans, and all living beings alike receive this power of grace. By this power of grace, not one Buddha fails to attain awakening; not one being fails to be saved; not one Buddha-land fails to be encompassed; not one mote of dust fails to be complete. No suffering is not ended; no joy is not brought to its fullest. When this mind is undimmed, all vows are forever fulfilled. Buddhas and patriarchs alike open the great gate of skillful means; sages and ordinary beings alike roam the ocean of perfect enlightenment." The mountain monk today holds aloft this wheel of vows. The entire monastery's diligent elders exhaust this mind's power, following the ancient system to establish the Water and Land Great Assembly of the living and the dead, of sky and earth, for half a month, day and night. In this, not one Buddha-event is not accompanied by the body; not one speck of dust is apart from this original seat. Each stick of incense, each flower, each lamp, each offering, each song of praise, each chant, each sutra, each Buddha-name, each word, each phrase—like Indra's net's light, like the hue of the mani jewel—interweaving radiance, mutually merging and all-encompassing. Arriving here, in worlds of subtle dust motes beyond reckoning, whether hidden or manifest, whether dark or bright, all beings drowning in the realms of suffering—how could they be fewer than the sun shining on all alike, than the wind blowing everywhere? Realizing that their nature is fundamentally empty, the one true reality alone appears. In this assembly, is there anyone who shares in this witness? Have you not heard it said: "Dwelling in the stream of birth and death, the pearl of the qilin shines alone in the vast sea. Settled on the shore of Nirvana, the moon-cassia gleams solitary in the blue autumn." Suddenly he gave a shout, struck the staff on the ground, and said: "If only one can, in a single thought, empty all existence—together we turn the Tathagata's true Dharma wheel."
