> Exiting the Valley with Master Huangbo

> Through the cycles of change and the shifting of the world, this small patch of land at Huangbo has survived, thanks to the majestic virtue and spiritual power of our late Master. Yet, who was it that brought safety out of danger and peace out of chaos? It was none other than the power of the Dharma that made it so. In my unenlightened days, I attended our late Master here, morning and evening, sleeping and eating in this place. It was not only the grace of his teachings but also the kindness of his nurturing that I have held deep in my heart, never to be forgotten for a single day. I am deeply ashamed of my own limited abilities, falsely praised by the community, and troubled by the relentless winds of karma, which have driven me north and south without a single peaceful year. Because of this, I have been unable to offer incense at the late Master’s stupa or even exchange a single word of greeting with you, my fellow practitioners. The burden of this guilt has weighed on me for a long time. This summer, the venerable Elder Su Shan came to Tiantong for a visit. Since he was returning to Chu, I have sent him especially to pay respects before the late Master’s stupa, to offer the gratitude I feel like rain and dew. I have prepared a modest offering of funds in a sealed envelope; though the rites are incomplete, I hope you will recognize the sincerity of my long-held devotion. “If the General does not die, he may yet return.” I do not know in what year I might be blessed with the opportunity to come and gaze upon the temple banner, fulfilling the wish of my lifetime. As I write this letter, my spirit soars there with all my longing.
