> I have just completed inscribing my late master’s epitaph on a stone tablet, and I have received your kind offer to contribute financially. For those who inherit a legacy, honoring their forebears is the true filial piety. I am not just passing on the lamp of my great master (Taibai), I am also unworthily succeeding to his seat of teaching. How then, for anything concerning my own life, could I cling to stinginess? The trouble is, some people, jealous that I am undeservedly enjoying the lingering grace of my master, are working to push me aside. If I were to humbly obey your request, they would accuse me of soliciting your help. This is why I have hesitated until now. However, I recall that eminent teachers of old sometimes retreated into the Western Mountains, lived in a hermitage at Damei, or deliberately blinded their eyes like Guizong Chang; some, like the Third Patriarch Can, never revealed their clan or birthplace. All of them certainly never wished for fame, but their fragrant memory remains undimmed to this day. This proves that when you try to escape fame, fame follows; when you flee renown, renown pursues you. If a person is not of that caliber, even if we carve their fame on Mount Taihua or into the dragon gate monument, they will disappear as the world decays, and their bones will turn to dust. Who would still remember them? Thus I once wrote about the Dragon Mountain hermit: "Blank stone tablets leave no name to claim, / But rivers and lakes hum of the hidden master's fame. / A pity so many crowded tombs arise— / Spring grasses sprout under rain skies." That’s my perspective. From this, you can surely tell my decision. I humbly beg you to treat those jealous people as they treat me, and also to follow the compassionate principle of benefiting all beings. I will go on according to the teachings of the Buddha. I regret that I can offer only a small donation, for which I feel deeply ashamed.
