### 序

> Preface

西來大意，自一祖至曹溪明明吐出，只為太明了，人多粉飭，故臨濟、雲門列祖師以隱語機鋒救之，使片言隻句剎那間勘出犴鳴獅吼，擬議便乖，轉盻即失。嗚呼！至矣。乃傳習既久，不能無弊，或勦襲機緣、或竊取窠臼、或答不副問而徒作囫圇之語、或未徹心地而漫為影響之談，致令棒喝成故套、豎指皆虛文，挽回宗風賴有卓人。幸昭覺佛冤和尚自性中樹光明幢，早歲費艸鞋錢遍參宿德，繼而于丈老人稟承印記，掣電之機諸方畏憚，瞻風之力野狐潛消，奉老人命主昭覺。凡上堂小參、法語機緣，如巨靈劈山、塗鼓奪命，照用應宜、殺活咸妙，時而踏倒須彌、掀翻大海，時而藏身北斗、合掌南宸，爐韝所錘，惺發者眾。座下門人集其廣錄，而梓傳之中饒舌于首，未免更添一重公案。

> The great meaning that came from the West was clearly expressed from the First Patriarch all the way to Caoxi. Precisely because it was too clear, people often embellished it. Thus, Patriarchs like Linji and Yunmen used cryptic words and sharp exchanges to rescue it, so that a single phrase or half a sentence could, in an instant, reveal the roar of a lion or the cry of a fox—any deliberation would miss it, and a moment's hesitation would lose it. Alas, it reached its peak! Yet as it was passed down and practiced over time, flaws inevitably arose. Some merely copied old exchanges, some stole set patterns, some gave answers that didn't match the questions—just speaking in vague, muddled words, or without having truly penetrated the mind-ground, they idly talked in echoes and shadows. This led to the stick and shout becoming stale routines, and raised fingers turning into empty gestures. To revive the ancestral style, we rely on outstanding individuals. Fortunately, Venerable Foyuan of Zhaojue Monastery planted a banner of light from within his own nature. In his early years, he wore out many straw sandals traveling far and wide to study under seasoned masters. Later, he received the seal of approval from the Elder Zhang. His lightning-fast exchanges were feared by all, and his power to discern the wind caused wild foxes to vanish. Following the Elder's instruction, he took charge of Zhaojue Monastery. Whether in formal lectures, small gatherings, Dharma talks, or exchanges, he was like a giant spirit splitting mountains or a drumbeat seizing life—his illumination and application were perfectly suited, his killing and reviving all wondrous. At times he would trample Mount Sumeru and overturn the great sea; at times he would hide within the Northern Dipper and join palms toward the Southern Stars. Under the forge of his teaching, many awakened. His disciples gathered his extensive records to publish them. Adding my babbling words at the beginning is, I'm afraid, just adding another layer of a public case.

時康熙丁卯中秋日，同門法弟宋肄樟，法名徹中，題于玉壘山房。
