### 序

> Preface

> Zhaojue Temple in Sichuan was an ancestral monastery since the Tang and Song dynasties. Its bell fell silent and its drums grew still, having long fallen into ruin. My reverend master witnessed this with a heavy heart, vowing to restore it. Leading the sangha, he built a thatched hut and dwelt amidst broken tiles and damaged foundations. At that time, eminent scholars and officials alike were drawn to his spiritual presence, offering incense and prostrating in reverence, gladly lending their support. Within just a few years, countless tiles lay in neat rows, lofty beams arched like rainbows, and a splendid temple arose. On the day of its inauguration, over ten thousand monks ascended the hall — how magnificent! At a time when the Dharma was in decline, to uphold the legacy and revive what had been abandoned, achieving such brilliance, was this merely the continuation of the Jibei lineage alone? The master, now eighty years old, weary of receiving visitors, built a straw hut nestled amid the shade of banyan trees and bamboo shadows in the temple's western corner. There, he tied a rope bed, mended robes by lamplight, and picked lice while sitting in the evening sun — this was his retirement plan. To succeed him on the high seat, letting the heavenly fragrance of the twin osmanthus trees fill the boundless realm, there is my Dharma brother, the Buddha's Adversary. My Dharma brother once visited Master Feiyin at Tiantong, sought out Master Mucheng at Daofeng, and studied under Master Eryin at Longyuan. Ultimately, he received Dharma confirmation from my reverend master, and has now presided over the seat of Dharma four times. He wields the power to kill and revive, striking with sudden and continuous spiritual maneuvers. In guiding people, his heart is kind but his hands firm, reaching down to the marrow and bone. When he utters a word or half a phrase, it is like wielding a vajra sword — anyone who clashes with it dies instantly; like burning incense of life-restoring fragrance — anyone who smells it revives. How different from the blockheads and board-carriers of today, who cannot even save themselves yet dare to occupy high seats and claim to be teachers, hanging up a sheep's head but selling dog meat, mistaking a turtle for a snake, deceiving others and themselves! I know there must be those with eyes on their foreheads in all directions, and there is no need for me to prattle on like this. All his formal talks, casual instructions, Dharma discourses, ceremonial words, verse comments, and old-case commentaries have been compiled by his disciples Xingchun and others into several volumes, now sent to the printers. He asked me, the mendicant Chaos of Zhugu Nunnery, to write this preface.
