Disrespectful acts include those relating to the Dharma and those relating to the Buddha. Whether it is toward a revered person, a disciple, a leader, or an ordinary person, if one does not show respect—whether in speech or in silence—or if one fails to follow in accordance with the teaching, then whenever one is disrespectful in body, speech, or mind, the offense is determined according to its severity. Regarding acts relating to the Dharma: First, reflect on whether one's own precepts are pure. If one does not engage in reading, reciting, teaching, or sharing the Dharma with others, or if one fails to practice proper mental attention and meditative concentration as appropriate—being lazy at heart and not cultivating wholesome qualities, showing no respect for the precepts, and speaking useless words—this all constitutes an offense requiring confession. Regarding acts relating to the Buddha: This means not diligently paying homage to sacred images, not regularly cleaning the stupas and incense platforms. If one sees them fallen into disrepair and has the ability to repair them but does not do so—being negligent and indolent in such duties—this also constitutes an offense requiring confession.
