> The Brahmā Net Sutra Bodhisattva Precepts Vow Chapter

> If a disciple of the Buddha should always make these vows: "Honor and support one's parents, teachers, and mentors; may I meet good teachers, companions, and spiritual guides who constantly teach me the Mahayana sutras and precepts—the ten stages of awakening, the ten forms of nurturing, the ten vajra practices, and the ten grounds—so that I may understand and practice the Dharma accordingly, upholding the Buddha's precepts firmly; even at the cost of body and life, may I never let this intention leave my mind." If a bodhisattva does not make such vows, it is a minor offense. If a disciple of the Buddha, having made these ten great vows, upholds the Buddha's precepts and further vows: "I would rather throw this body into raging fire, deep pits, or mountains of swords than ever violate the sutras and precepts of the Buddhas of the three times by engaging in impure acts with any woman." Then make this vow: "I would rather have my body wrapped in a thousand layers of red-hot iron netting than, with this broken-precept body, accept any clothing offered by faithful donors." Then make this vow: "I would rather swallow red-hot iron balls and endure great flowing fires for hundreds of thousands of kalpas than, with this mouth that has broken precepts, eat the finest foods offered by faithful donors." Then make this vow: "I would rather lie on beds of great flowing fire, iron netting, or red-hot iron ground than, with this broken-precept body, accept any of the hundred kinds of beds and seats offered by faithful donors." Then make this vow: "I would rather have my body pierced by three hundred spears for one or two kalpas than, with this broken-precept body, accept the finest medicines offered by faithful donors." Then make this vow: "I would rather throw this body into a cauldron of boiling iron for hundreds of thousands of kalpas than, with this broken-precept body, accept the thousands of kinds of lodgings, houses, gardens, and fields offered by faithful donors." Then make this vow: "I would rather have this body shattered by iron hammers, from head to foot, reduced to dust, than, with this broken-precept body, receive the respectful bows and homage of faithful donors." Then make this vow: "I would rather have both eyes plucked out by hundreds of thousands of red-hot iron knives and spears than, with a mind that has broken precepts, look upon another's beauty." Then make this vow: "I would rather have my ears pierced by hundreds of thousands of iron awls for one or two kalpas than, with a mind that has broken precepts, listen to delightful sounds." Then make this vow: "I would rather have my nose cut off by hundreds of thousands of sharp knives than, with a mind that has broken precepts, greedily crave fragrant scents." Then make this vow: "I would rather have my tongue cut out by hundreds of thousands of sharp knives than, with a mind that has broken precepts, consume the pure and delicious foods of others." Then make this vow: "I would rather have my body split open by a sharp axe than, with a mind that has broken precepts, cling to pleasant sensations." Then make this vow: "May all sentient beings attain Buddhahood." If a bodhisattva does not make these vows, it is a minor offense.

> Question: "The Diamond Sutra's collection says its merit is immense, so why isn't it recorded?"

> He replied: “Because it is fabricated, and also greatly harmful. They say: ‘Reciting this compilation once surpasses reciting the Diamond Sutra three hundred thousand times.’ If foolish people believe this, they will set aside the many scrolls of the sutra and stop reciting it, thinking that one recitation of this compilation is enough to fulfill their duty. Would this not mislead them into falling into hell? As for works like \*Fenzhu\*, \*Gaowang\*, \*Miaosha\*, \*Xuepen\*, and \*Shousheng\*, all of which are invented and fabricated, none are worthy of belief.”

> Question: "The Recorded Miracles state that the High King reciting sutras can avert disasters—how can this be considered false?"
