> The \*Samadhi of Non-Contention\* states: "The \*Sutra of Supreme Samadhi\* says: 'Suppose there is a person who does not practice meditation, does not personally realize the Dharma, but with a scattered mind recites the twelve divisions of scriptures, and even preaches these sutras for as many eons as the sands of the Ganges River—this is not as good as a single moment of thought entering into samadhi. Even if one merely resolves to sit in meditation, they already surpass all debaters in the ten directions, let alone those who attain meditative concentration.' The debaters said to the Buddha: 'We are widely learned, uphold the teachings, and preach without hindrance. The sixteen great assemblies revere us as if we were the World-Honored Buddha. Why do you not praise us, but instead praise only meditation?' The Buddha told the debaters: 'Your minds are scattered. Even if you are widely learned, what benefit is there? If you wish to contend with meditative concentration, it is like a blind person trying to see all colors, like someone without hands or feet trying to embrace Mount Sumeru, like a bird with broken wings trying to fly in the sky, like a mosquito's wings trying to block out the sun and moon, like someone without a boat trying to cross the great ocean—there is no such possibility. You debaters are just like this.' Furthermore, the \*Vibhasha\* says: 'If a monk is unwilling to sit in meditation, does not personally realize the Dharma, but with a scattered mind recites, lectures, and debates over words and letters, pretending to know what he does not know, pretending to be capable when he is not, and looks down with arrogance on those who practice meditation—such a debater will, upon death, fall into hell, swallow red-hot iron balls, and be reborn as a pig, sheep, chicken, dog, or the like.'"
