> The Bodhisattva's Teaching on Diligence

> The Great Jewel Heap Sutra says: "When those two bodhisattvas practiced diligence, for a thousand years they never had a thought of wanting to lie down, never had a thought of wanting to sit, never once bent their bodies to squat or crouch, never ate a second time, never had a thought to judge whether food was salty or bland, sweet or bitter, pungent or sour, delicious or bad. Each time they went to beg for food, they never looked at the face of the person giving the food—whether it was a man or a woman—and did not even glance at young boys or girls. Dwelling beneath a tree, they never looked up at the tree's appearance. The clothes they wore were never changed even once. They never gave rise to a single thought of desire, ill will, or harm. They never gave rise to thoughts connected to relatives—father, mother, brothers, sisters, or any family members. They never gave rise to thoughts of looking up at the sky to observe the sun, moon, stars, clouds, or other such sights. They never gave rise to thoughts of moving from shade to sunlight, or from heat to coolness. In bitter cold, they never gave rise to thoughts of covering themselves with thick, warm clothing to seek comfort. They never gave rise to thoughts of discussing meaningless talk about the world. Thus did those two bodhisattvas practice such steadfast diligence."

> A commentary says: Throughout a thousand years, the bodhisattva never once gave rise to a thought of wanting to lie down; the phrase "throughout a thousand years" applies to every activity mentioned here. This is the conduct of a great bodhisattva, beyond the reach of ordinary people. The reason for specifically pointing this out is to help people realize that the bodhisattva went a thousand years without a single such thought, while we cannot keep this up even for a single year, a single month, a single day, or even a single moment—how could we not feel ashamed? If we do not strive harder, even doing a small part will be difficult.
