> Master Zhifeng, style name Xiangxian, also known by his pen name "Master of the Zhizhi Studio". He was born in 1900 in Yueqing County, Wenzhou. His secular surname was Shi, and his family were farmers by trade. Even as a child, he showed a natural affinity for wisdom, spending his days engrossed in books. In 1913, he graduated from the county's upper-level primary school. Following this, he took ordination under his uncle, the monk Wanding, at a monastery called Longdong in his home district. The monk taught him the teachings of "Tiantai Calming and Insight." In 1915, he received the full precepts at Miaozhi Temple in Yongjia. In his daily life, he delved deeply into the scriptures, and in his spare time, he also studied the works of famous Eastern and Western philosophers. In 1919, he took a teaching position at the "Timely Rain Monastic School" at Huguo Temple in Yongjia. After three years, his colleagues there passed away one after another, leaving him alone and struggling to continue. He reluctantly set aside his work in spreading the Dharma for a time. Yet, as the world was changing rapidly and the monastic community was increasingly in decline, he could not bear to sit idly by and watch the True Dharma fall into ruin. Thus, he took up the great vow to turn back the tide of decline. At that time, the great Master Taixu was advocating for reforming the monastic system nationwide and establishing a Buddhist academy. So Master Zhifeng packed his bags and traveled far to study under his guidance. After two years, he returned to his hometown and entered a personal retreat at Pujue Temple, located beside the Luoxia Pond on the western edge of Yongjia City. This temple was the sacred site of the great Master Yongjia. To the west of the temple, across the water, the city wall wound for miles. To the east, beautiful trees were lush and green, with the Pine Terrace rising steeply. Before him, the waters of Luoxia Pond were clear and blue, rippling faintly. Behind him, the bell from Sujue Temple could be heard, a faint, clear sound. Such scenes of water reflections and mountain light, of morning wind and evening mists, were enough to dispel one’s worldly pride. Under the starry sky and moonlit night, with willows gently swaying and orioles singing, the place stirred thoughts beyond the mundane world. But Master Zhifeng found all this unique and inspiring. Before even completing a full year in retreat, he came out to establish the “Three Families Lecture Hall” at Huguo Temple. He was skilled in poetry and prose, and during his free time between classes, he would often compose verses with his students by the bridge over the creek or beside the rocky shores. Two years later, due to financial difficulties, the lecture hall was forced to close. In 1928, at the behest of his mentor Master Taixu, he came to Min College to serve as the main lecturer in the Buddhist Studies Department. He also spent time each summer teaching and spreading the Dharma in various places throughout Jiangsu and Zhejiang. In 1931, he served as the superintendent of Nanputuo Temple. The following year, he took on the role of editor for the \*Modern Buddhism\* monthly journal. In 1933, again following Master Taixu's instructions, he traveled to Hubei to take up the post of chief editor for the \*Haichaoyin\* monthly journal.

> Since ordination, the Master has devoted himself tirelessly to study and practice, traveling widely with great diligence for the sake of the Dharma and for the benefit of others—truly worthy of much praise. For what the Master does, with the revitalization of Buddhism as his mission, can never be compared with those who seek only fame and reputation. I recall when the Master was about to leave his hometown for Fujian; he wrote a poem to encourage his students, which goes: "Fierce winds and violent rains shake the tide; The spread of Buddhism today fills me with sorrow. As I lift my hand to steady the sand tray, It is no puppet show that I play. Boundless profound truths must be deeply explored; Do not waste this precious time, quickly restore! As I depart, I have but one concern— I long for pillars of great talent in years to return." From this, we can glimpse the Master’s aspirations and profound resolve. I am fortunate to be among the Master’s fellow villagers, and I have received more of his guidance than most. Now that he travels far away, I cannot help but feel reluctant to see him go. I have briefly recorded these recollections as a memento, that I may never forget.
