一

> One.

> "Monks, I was free from suffering, completely free from suffering, ultimately free from suffering. Monks, my father's residence had bathing pools, and entirely for me, blue lotuses were planted in one section, red lotuses in another, and white lotuses in another. Monks, I used no sandalwood except that from Kāsi. Monks, my clothing was from Kāsi — my robes were Kāsi cloth, my undergarments were Kāsi cloth, and my upper garments were Kāsi cloth. Monks, to shield me from dust, grass, or dew, a white parasol was held over me day and night, in cold and heat. Monks, I had three palaces — one for winter, one for summer, and one for the rainy season. Monks, during the four months of the rainy season, I resided in the summer palace, entertained by musicians, never needing to descend from it. Monks, just as in other people's homes, the servants, workers, and dependents are fed coarse food and salt porridge, similarly, in my father's home, the servants, workers, and dependents were given meals of rice and meat."

> "O disciples, although I possessed such great wealth and had transcended suffering, I reflected: 'The ordinary person, unaware of the Dharma, grows old themselves, unable to escape aging. Yet, when they see others aging and decaying, they feel distressed, ashamed, and repulsed—looking down upon them. I too shall grow old; I cannot avoid aging. Since I too shall grow old and cannot escape it, why should I, upon seeing others aging and decaying, feel distressed, ashamed, and repulsed? This is unfitting for me.'" "O disciples, when I contemplated in this way, all youthful pride and complacency were completely severed."

> An unlearned ordinary person meets with death. They cannot escape death themselves, yet they see others die and feel distressed, ashamed, and repulsed. But I too must die; I cannot escape death. I am inevitably going to die, yet if I see others die and feel distressed, ashamed, and repulsed—that is not appropriate for me. Monks, when I reflect like this, all pride in being alive during one's lifetime is completely cut off.
