The Recorded Sayings of Venerable Xueguan is a collection of the Dharma teachings transmitted by the Ming Dynasty Chan master Xueguan Zhiyin, compiled by his disciple Chuanshan. During the late Ming period, Chan flourished vigorously. Master Xueguan inherited the lineage of the Caodong school, and his recorded sayings skillfully adapt teachings to circumstances, containing Dharma discourses from the high seat, dialogues of opportunity, commentaries on ancient cases with verses, as well as letters and poetic compositions, revealing his Chan awakening and pedagogical methods. The content is both profound and accessible, integrating Chan insight with daily practice, serving as an important text for studying the thought and practice of late Ming Chan Buddhism. This record not only embodies the characteristics of the Caodong school's silent illumination Chan, but also demonstrates the master's harmonizing approach to teaching and Pure Land practice, holding a pivotal position in Buddhist history that connects past and future. It remains a vital source for later generations investigating the style of the Caodong tradition.
