### 四、出世行道，切思開拓古風，不得同異相埒

> 4\. Leaving the World to Practice the Way: Eagerly Strive to Revive the Ancient Spirit, Do Not Compare for Similarity or Difference

世尊說法三百餘會，王化恆河沙數剎土，廓善權之路，弘濟益之津，比三界為一家，視四生為一子，曾不以牛羊眼觀眾生。噫嘻！眼界何其寬廣？胸襟何其闊大也？後人不識大同無我之風，堅執井蛙淺隘之量，乃謂爾是臨濟，我是曹洞，鄰比吳越，至親仇讎，何以化世俗，去貢高，離我相乎？追思馬祖爐中受煆，石頭家裏傳燈，以洞山之敏學，為臨濟之克家，意誼和藹，乃若是哉！夫世之矯枉是務，媢嫉自矜者，斯不可與交耳！況仁人具純誠救弊之心，匪德全而量包之，加以讚美，不存爾汝，則爭鬥之風曷息？而同異之情曷捐？又何以啟迪嗣良，標幟後勁耶？故處世當我禮於人，不責人禮於我，便是超群拔萃之儔。以此獎俗，俗無不淳；以此行道，道無不達。則無量法門擎在掌中，四海波濤吸入毛孔，誠為不難，尚有宗風而不大振者哉？在後之賢智眼明者力行，而質諸叢林之荷法大老其可。

> The World-Honored One expounded the Dharma in over three hundred assemblies, transforming countless worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. He broadened the path of skillful means, spread the raft of salvation, regarded the Three Realms as one family, and looked upon all four forms of life as his own children, never viewing sentient beings with the eyes of an ox or sheep. Ah! How vast his vision! How immense his compassion! Later generations, failing to understand the spirit of unity without self, stubbornly cling to narrow views like frogs in a well. They say, "You are Linji; I am Caodong." Neighbors are divided like Wu and Yue; those closest become bitter enemies. How can this transform worldly people, eliminate arrogance, and shed attachment to self? Recall how Master Mazu was tempered in the furnace, and how Master Shitou passed on the lamp. The keen intellect of Dongshan became the legacy of Linji. Their harmony and kindness were truly like this! Those who insist on distorting truth, consumed by envy and arrogance, are unworthy of friendship. How much more so those who possess the sincere heart of a compassionate person committed to saving the world? Without complete virtue and a magnanimous heart, even if one offers praise without distinctions, how can the wind of contention cease? How can the feelings of division be let go? Moreover, how can one inspire worthy successors and guide later generations? Thus, in this world, we should bow to others, not demand they bow to us. That is the mark of an extraordinary person. Use this to encourage worldly people; all will become simple and honest. Use this to walk the path; every path will lead to success. Then, all the countless Dharma gates will rest in the palm of your hand; the surging waves of the four seas will be drawn into a single pore. Truly, that is not difficult. How could the ancestral style possibly fail to flourish? Let wise and clear-eyed successors put this into practice and seek verification from the great Dharma masters of the monasteries. That would be admirable.
