### 堂規序

> Preface to the Hall Regulations

一大藏故紙，不是瞿曇說底；千七百葛藤，亦非祖師傳底。以箇些子，累得天下人橫也不是、豎也不是，陜路上更被人推落萬仞懸崖，直得筋斷骨折，緩緩地蘇醒將來，尤道我因此出一身白汗，慶快平生。到雲門會下，猶是官驛裏撮馬糞底漢，未為奇也。欲紹此箇大事，須硬著脊梁骨，把疑團子放在胸中，勇於自信、任於安危。有朝卷起簾來，看見屋頭山色，秖有㘞地曰：「是吾本有之物。」豈復辨其是與不是耶？此謂之過關者，不必從關吏問可否。其或於坦途上自生窒礙，萌好惡之端、乖動靜之相，非特受關吏盤訐，而自無出身之路，不見我雲門關裏妙密之事也。故預約法數章，以作攻玉之石，惟仁者慎諸。

> A whole library of scriptures is not what the Buddha himself taught; a thousand seven hundred tangled cases are not the direct transmission of the patriarchs. Yet with just a little of this, people everywhere are trapped—unable to stand, unable to sit, and on the narrow mountain path, they’re pushed off a ten-thousand-foot cliff, breaking every bone and tendon. Slowly coming back to consciousness, they say, "I broke out in a sweat and have never felt so relieved in my life." But even those who reach Yunmen's assembly are just men shoveling horse manure at an official post station—not impressive at all. To truly inherit this great matter, you must stiffen your spine, place the ball of doubt in your chest, be brave in self-confidence, and entrust yourself to both safety and danger. One day, when you roll up the curtain and see the mountain beyond the roof, you'll suddenly exclaim: "This is what originally belonged to me!" At that point, how could you argue whether it’s "this" or "not this"? This is what is meant by "passing through the barrier"—you don't need to ask the gatekeeper whether you can pass or not. If, on the other hand, you create obstacles on an open road, giving rise to preferences and aversions, disrupting the harmony of stillness and activity, you will not only be interrogated by the gatekeeper but will have no way out at all. You would never see the subtle and mysterious matter inside Yunmen's barrier. Therefore, I have prepared a few chapters of Dharma as a whetstone to polish your jade. May the wise take heed.
