I bow to Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, and to the Greatly Compassionate Avalokitesvara. I take refuge in the wondrous verses of the Dharani, and in all the Three Jewels. You who rescue beings from all suffering and distress, who fulfill all hopes and wishes, You who have compassion for all living beings, I pray you bestow your merciful care and protection.

Your disciple, Zhixu, is heavily burdened by karma from past lives, and deeply mired in transgressions in this present one. In both worldly and spiritual matters, I face many demonic obstacles. Not only am I unable to swiftly attain the fruit and universally repay the Four Kindnesses, I am also unable to single-mindedly cultivate the sacred path and serve as a model for the Three Realms. The years pass idly by, lost to indulgence and procrastination. This has led to external circumstances pressing in, and a severe illness afflicting my body. Furthermore, deluded by empty reputation, I have burdened fellow practitioners, both monastic and lay, my virtuous friends and teachers, with their various offerings and their various acts of support and protection. Reflecting inwardly upon myself, what virtue do I possess to deserve this? In quiet contemplation, I am filled with increasing shame and fear.

Therefore, from the eighth day of the sixth month until the fourteenth day, I will set aside all other distractions and establish a seven-day retreat platform. I will single-mindedly recite the verses of the Dharani, to repay the profound kindness of my external supporters. I reverently burn incense on my arm as an offering to the Three Jewels.

First, I sincerely pray that the Bhikshu Guohai's precept-root is firm and stable, his samadhi and wisdom perfect and bright. May his correct view be outstanding, able to transform the trends of the age and not be transformed by them. May he decisively become a great vessel, a pillar and beam for the mansion of the Dharma.

Second, I sincerely pray that the Sramaneras Yuanguo and Jingyi may increase in lifespan, increase in vitality, increase in merit and fortune, increase in wisdom. May they possess great wisdom and great vows, great patience and great discernment, inner and outer as one, consistent from beginning to end.

Third, I sincerely pray that for Zhenzong, Chixing, and Lingxiu of the Zhaoshan quarters at Chengtian Temple, and for Kuozhao, Chechen, Tiji, Yongzheng, Zhouqia, and Long'en, and for Wenxing and others, each in their worldly affairs, may they encounter no obstacles or difficulties. In the path beyond the world, may their roots of faith grow. Without leaving worldly toil, may they clearly perceive the Buddha-nature.

Fourth, I sincerely pray that the Upasaka observing the Bodhisattva precepts, Cheng Zhiyong, may have obstructive conditions eliminated, his body and mind forever at peace. Within the Buddha-Dharma, may he deeply enter the treasury of sutras, his wisdom like the sea. Within Confucian studies, may he soon attain the highest ranks, becoming a great fortress of gold.

Fifth, I sincerely pray that the one with correct knowledge, Han Fengyou, may be liberated from the dust of guests, his obstructive conditions purified. May he fully understand that affection and attachment are like shackles. Naturally subduing and severing the roots of affliction and transgression, may his body and mind be joyful, his fortune and longevity both flourishing.

Sixth, I sincerely pray that Qian Shigui and Cheng Tonghui may have their great resolve never regress, their correct view grow clearer daily. For self-benefit, may they realize the Dharma's single source; for benefiting others, may they universally practice the Four Means of Embracing. May they fulfill the ordinary wish for a child, and accomplish the sacred practice of broadly protecting the Dharma.

Seventh, I sincerely pray that the Sramanas Qingzhao, Yongque, Zhiwei, Dayuan, Mingjiao, Xingfang, Zuxin, Zhixun, Changle, Zhiyin, Zhiliang, Zhiming, Zhicheng, Chengzhi, Xinghong, Yuanliu, Yuanjing, Huixian, Wude, Dingming, Changxin, Hailang, Hengguan, Liaofan, and for those of this place, Fayun Hermitage, Xingbang, Wusheng, and others, may each have their fortune and longevity increased and exalted, their wisdom-life firm and stable. May they be far removed from calamities and obstacles, and accomplish the fruit of the Way. For those whose good roots have ripened, may liberation come now; for those whose good roots have been planted, may they ripen now.

Eighth, I sincerely pray that the Upasakas Cheng Zhiwo, Ma Chengzhi, Yao Nian, Zhang Zanyu, Liu Haiyan, Wan Yingpeng, Chen Jingchuan, Wang Sihu, Shen Sanlang, Li Zaibai, and the devoted women, Madam Zhong of the Pan family, Madam Zhong of the Li family, Madam Pan of the Wang family, Elder Sister Li, Second Sister Li, and others, in their worldly affairs, may they have all wishes fulfilled and be joyful. In the path beyond the world, may their aspirations seek deeply. For those who have not planted good roots, may they plant them now. For those who have planted good roots, may they grow now. Any evil deeds they wish to undertake may all fail to materialize. All good karma they cultivate may achieve accomplishment. May all gates to the evil destinies be closed for them. May the proper path of humans, devas, and Nirvana be opened wide for them.

Ninth, I sincerely pray that I, Zhixu, from now on, may have sickness and suffering eliminated, body and mind healthy and at peace. May my merit and fortune increase, my lifespan be extended. May I swiftly complete my vow to compile the canon, and soon fulfill my heart's desire to sever delusion. May my writings open the eyes of humans and devas, each word perfectly aligned with the Buddha's mind. May my undertakings create fields of merit for this latter age, every matter flowing smoothly according to my original intent. I further pray that with all my monastic and lay teachers and friends, we may always be a family of Bodhi, be reborn together in the supreme land of Ultimate Bliss, all receive predictions, and together teach and transform beings throughout the ten directions. Life after life, may we be a supporting assembly for one another. Wherever we are, may we be good spiritual friends for one another. Until we reach the site of enlightenment, may there never be any separation or obstruction.

Tenth, I, Zhixu, also, for the purpose of resolving doubts by drawing lots, burn another stick of incense as an offering to the Three Jewels. I pray that with your present knowledge and present sight, you bear true witness, causing the lot I draw to be decisively and spiritually responsive. From this time onward, may I practice with single-minded determination, forever free from doubt or regret. May self-benefit and benefiting others not be in vain, my merit not abandoned. May my Bodhi vows be fulfilled, broadly liberating all living beings.

I reverently implore the Three Jewels of the Dharma Realm, the Compassionate Lord Ksitigarbha, and the Greatly Compassionate Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, together bestow your compassion, take pity and accept my prayer.
