> A Mirror for the Mind, Shown to a Zen Practitioner

> Though I am unworthy to be counted among the Buddha's followers, having taken the triple refuge, I reflect inwardly and hold myself accountable: after leaving my parents to enter this non-home life, what is it I truly seek? With the robe on my back and my head shaved, I bear the dignified appearance of a monk. If I do not strive with vigor, renewing my determination daily, seeking to awaken to the great matter of life and death within my own nature and to shoulder the great Dharma, then I am like a fine Buddha hall—but with no Buddha inside! If I instead indulge in craving, letting my mind and body run loose, whether relishing rich foods and luxuriating in pride, or leaning on the powerful and chasing after fame and profit, or neglecting the precepts and rules of conduct in thought, word, and deed, wasting my time in idleness and play—then how is such a monk any different from an ordinary worldly person? An ancient master said: "The hells are not the greatest suffering; losing one's human form beneath the monk's robe is the greatest suffering of all." Now, if we wish to leap beyond the net of karma in the three realms and escape the grasp of the King of Death, we must overturn the nest of ignorance, penetrate the matter of awakening through and through, and walk hand in hand with the Buddhas and patriarchs. That is why Master Yaoshan said: "This matter requires standing atop the highest mountain and walking along the deepest seafloor. Whatever cannot be let go of within the inner chamber becomes a leak." So tell me—how does one attain such a state free of leaks? If practitioners can see into this right here, they will realize that Yaoshan has never entered extinction.
