> Hearing that the son is about to become a filial and upright official

> With the arrival of spring, my spleen has been weakened, and to this day I have not yet regained a full appetite. I long for a meeting with you, for amid the wandering life of a traveler, receiving your words is like gathering pearls and breathing in the fragrance of orchids—never falling into dullness or desolation. What joy could surpass this? When the meditation master Yuetan visited, I asked after your well-being and learned that you have been unwell. I cannot help but feel a deep sense of shared affliction. Elder Dongshan, when attending to the sick, saw no sickness at all—this is indeed the method of finding peace and ease! Laozi said: "My greatest misfortune is that I have a body." This is precisely the wisdom of transcending the body while preserving it. The ancients, having inwardly shed body and mind and outwardly released worldly burdens, may find their bodies ill, yet nothing can oppress or cling to them. Though the eight kinds of suffering assail them from all sides, they cannot disturb such a one. You too, in manifesting sickness like Vimalakīrti in his teaching, already possess a body and mind whose karmic afflictions are clear and luminous as polished crystal. Even embracing illness, you roam in playful freedom! In penning this letter of concern, I realize I have been overly verbose!
