Ascending the Hall

On the full moon day of the tenth month in the year of Xinsi, during the Chongzhen era, the Master was residing at Huayan Temple on Niu'nan Mountain in Shizhu, Kuizhou Prefecture. Ascending the hall for the opening of the retreat, he lit incense and paid homage to the Emperor. Then, holding up the incense again, he said: "This incense is offered to my former teacher, Chui Wan, to repay the kindness of his Dharma milk."

The vice-abbot struck the gavel. The Master raised his fly-whisk and said: "Look, yet you cannot see. Seek, yet you cannot find. There is no trace of coming or going—in vain you grope at me." He threw it down and said: "Stoke a fire in the cold place."

A monk asked: "This thing does not require you to hold it up and point it out. Please, venerable sir, say something else." The Master replied: "An iron tree hanging a lantern."

"Every phrase has an eye—this is called Chan. Nostrils and lips hang straight for all to see. A gold needle embroiders the mandarin-duck curtain; The great earth, mountains, and rivers share one sky."

The master ascended the hall, struck his staff once, and said: "If you understand this ancient Buddha, then it's clear. If you don't understand, there's nothing I can do for you."

Teaching on the Precepts, the master clapped his hands and said:

"This is the true precept. Reflect carefully: it never crumbles, never breaks, never diminishes, never harms. Who can distinguish black from white? It is neither blue nor yellow. It should abide nowhere, yet it is the indestructible vajra. The vajra's essence is fully revealed in all its brilliance."

He then gave a shout.

Teaching the assembly: "High, and yet higher—on the peak of Mount Sumeru, the white hair-tuft shines. Low, and yet lower—within the great ocean, the mani pearl is retrieved. What about neither high nor low? Today, this mountain monk simply and evenly releases the restrictions."

The master resided at Yunlai Temple on Baofeng Mountain in Wan County and ascended the hall. A monk asked: "The forge is ablaze—may I ask, does Yunlai have any news?" The master said: "At midnight, on the cliff, a solitary moon is still." The monk continued: "How will the master act?" The master said: "A single cry—an old gibbon in a high tree." The monk pressed: "What then falls to this student's lot?" The master said: "A hair sprouts from a great tree." Another monk asked: "Leaving aside the ultimate truth, what of the opening of this hall?" The master said: "Tossing an embroidered ball where the rapids surge." The monk responded: "In that case, your student has something to rely on." The master said: "If there is affinity, you meet; if not, you pass by. Speaking of affinity, face to face, you do not see; speaking of no affinity, a thousand miles are not distant. Do not cling to talk of having or lacking affinity. Simply attend to your own matter; do not judge others' faults. If you penetrate and awaken, you will find a place to rest and settle anywhere. Then even the King of Hell, or a hundred thousand billion Shakyamunis, could do nothing to you. But if you have not awakened or resolved, you cannot move freely even among the grass tips—how then could you act within the great forge?" He then struck the staff once.

The Master addressed the assembly: "Sometimes I speak of worldly dharmas, sometimes of transcendent dharmas. Yet transcendent dharmas are precisely worldly dharmas, and worldly dharmas are transcendent. Why? Because the world and transcendence are not two. When you hear one sound fully, there's nowhere to find separation. Who among you is not a man of true spirit? A monk's nostrils are the path of the Tathagata."

A monk asked: "I do not ask about ascending the seat to teach Dharma. What about before stepping out of the abbot's quarters?"

The Master replied: "The peach blossoms at Eastern Grove are brilliantly red."

The monk continued: "What about after stepping out?"

The Master said: "The flowing water at Western Stream gurgles and splashes."

The monk pressed further: "What about when one neither steps out nor stays in?"

The Master let out a sharp shout.

The Master resided at the Great Buddha Temple in Wan County. One day, he ascended the hall.

A monk asked: "The county magistrate has arranged offerings to dedicate merit to the late Madam Cheng. How will the Master guide this?"

The Master replied: "Where is not the Western Paradise?"

The monk continued: "What is the phrase for benefiting beings and responding to others?"

The Master said: "On Duli Mountain, all is Dūlī."

The monk pressed further: "What is the phrase that transcends words and speech?"

The Master then shouted, and the monk also shouted.

The Master said: "Such meddling."

Another monk asked: "What is the Great Buddha's Crown?"

The Master held up his whisk and said: "Look."

The monk asked: "Is there anything beyond that?"

The Master then descended from his seat.
