### 三十三祖慧能大師

> The Thirty-Third Patriarch, Master Huineng

新州困蓬廬，采薪而奉母。客偶誦金經，明星正當午。辭親走黃梅，一似出林虎。問字不識字，問義卻能詁。弘師大無情，領執下廊廡。任春始八月，一旦受圖譜。守綱混流俗，荷法良亦苦。法性開性法，始獲落僧數。理楫歸新州，一撾退堂鼓。

> In Xinzhou, he lived in a humble hut, gathering firewood to care for his mother. A traveler happened to chant the Diamond Sutra as the morning star shone at noon. He bid farewell to his family and journeyed to Huangmei, fierce as a tiger leaving the woods. When asked about words, he knew none; when asked about meaning, he could explain. Master Hongren, stern and unyielding, assigned him to the courtyard to work. From the start of spring until the eighth month, he received the transmission in an instant. Upholding the teachings amidst the worldly flow, bearing the Dharma was truly arduous. When the nature of Dharma awakened the Dharma nature, he finally joined the ranks of monks. He prepared his boat to return to Xinzhou, striking the drum to end the assembly.
