> Praise by the Lay Practitioners of Huazhou's Western Pass

咦潼關之西，終南之北，少華之間，通身漏洩。暑退涼初，碧流秋月，遮漢荒疏，天生愚拙。諸善友！聽予說：「不是心，不是佛，肚裏空空，虛無一物。一條官路直如弦，更問如何遭一摑？！沉沉冷坐鎮千峰，七尺烏藤掌握中，魔佛到來成兩段，虛空粉碎血通紅。」

> <note place="inline">Ah</note><row>West of Tongguan Pass, north of the Zhongnan Mountains, among the Lesser Hua peaks, the entire body is exposed. As summer fades and early coolness arrives, the autumn moon reflects on clear streams. The vast sky appears desolate, and heaven made me clumsy by nature. Good friends! Listen to me say: "It is not mind, not Buddha—the belly is empty, void of a single thing. A straight official road like a bowstring, yet if you ask further, why endure a slap?! Sitting quietly in deep stillness, freezing in meditation across a thousand peaks, a seven-foot black vine staff held firmly in hand. When demons and Buddhas both arrive, they split into two—the void shatters, blood turns crimson red."</row>

咦！咄哉俗漢，阿誰喜見？稚子描來，神頭鬼面。秉佛祖機，握吹毛劍。心直如弦，性急如箭。觸著便發，雷轟掣電。

> <note place="inline">Hey!</note><row>Oh, ordinary fellow! Who delights in such a sight? A child's drawing—divine heads and ghostly faces. Holding the Buddha's wisdom, wielding a razor-sharp sword. Heart straight as a bowstring, temper quick as an arrow. Touch it and it ignites—thunder roaring, lightning flashing.</row>

者箇村僧，不近人情。耳無兩竅，眼露雙睛。毀犯清泉淨戒，吹滅浮山祖燈。團圞衲子兮口甜如蜜，蒸烹佛祖兮心毒如砒。箇是渠儂真面目，一任人呼是馬驢。

> This village monk is cold and unfeeling to human ways. With ears lacking any openings, his eyes reveal a double glare. He breaks the pure precepts of clear springs and extinguishes the ancestral lamp of Floating Mountain. His disciples circle close, their tongues sweet as honey, Yet he steams and cooks the Buddhas and patriarchs, his heart as poison as arsenic. This is his true face— Let people call him horse or donkey, he cares not.
