The Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Doushuai Buling Jian is a compilation of the words and deeds of the eminent Qing Dynasty Chan master Zongjian, edited by his disciples Miaosheng and others. Chan Master Zongjian was active in the early Qing Dynasty within the Linji school, inheriting the dharma lineage from the line of Po Shan Haiming. The contents of this work encompass formal hall discourses, informal instructions to the assembly, encounter dialogues, commentaries on old cases with verses, as well as letters and gathas, offering a comprehensive presentation of the master’s profound insights into practice, doctrine, and the application of Chan. As an important Chan document of the Qing Dynasty, this recorded sayings not only reflects the spread and development of the Linji style in the early Qing, but also provides valuable historical material for the study of Chan thought and practice systems of that period, holding significant academic and practical value within the corpus of Chinese Buddhist Chan literature.
