> To the Layman Anran

> For many years since my enlightenment, I have had no letters or visitors—only a few elder masters like Yanshan, Xilin, Yongquan, Daci, and Yongwan, who are like dharma brothers. Now Yongwan has entered nirvana, while the others are separated by mountains and rivers, preventing regular gatherings. Whenever I think of this, my heart aches. In this remote water village, amid the complexities of worldly affairs, I find solace in the simple joys: planting green water chestnuts, picking white chrysanthemums, watching hibiscus reflect in the water, and breathing the fragrance of osmanthus blossoms in the moonlight. This tranquil purity provides enough happiness to follow conditions peacefully—far, far superior to those insignificant people chasing after fame and profit like gnats drawn to stench.

> Recently, those who claim to be spiritual teachers in this declining age have often turned seeking connections into their main practice. They ask for letters of recommendation, relying on influence and status. Initially, they use bribes and underhanded methods to secure residence in large monasteries, but ultimately, when funds run out, they suffer humiliation and are overwhelmed with shame. Alas! If they actually felt that shame, they would still have a bit of life in them. The real problem is that they fail to recognize their own disgrace. I have spoken these words because of actual circumstances. Since Wukong has come, I am sending this letter once more. As for the official approval of monastic ordination certificates, it has been temporarily suspended—I worry it may not go through after all. May I also ask how your esteemed mother is recovering from her illness? Have the Dharma instructions for Chao Xun been sent? Please inform me on both matters.
