> The Great Way is deep and vast, profoundly subtle and mysteriously profound. Since it transcends conceptual paths, how can it be captured by words? The Way is non-dual, most simple and most easy. Common beings and sages share the same origin—only the Way itself is ultimate. It is like good grain in the field: it must depend on the plow and hoe. A beautiful gem hidden in rough stone must be cut and polished. Without cutting and polishing, one cannot obtain a rare world treasure. Without the plow and hoe, one cannot harvest cartloads of grain. Lingyun saw the peach blossoms; Taiyuan heard the horn sound; Changqing wore through his meditation cushion; Patriarch Lu strapped a stone to his back—all these were people who dedicated themselves to the Way with earnest effort and diligent study. They regarded personal gain as light as a speck of dust, and esteemed spiritual teachers as heavily as their own kin. They lamented the fleeting passage of time, agonized over the sinking of birth and death, let no obstacle disturb their intent, and weathered every hardship without bending their resolve. This is what is called "studying the Way." Therefore it is said: "The problem is not that people fail to understand the Way, but that they fail to study it deeply." If you study deeply and understand the Way, how could you not become a Buddha or Patriarch? If you don't study the Way when young, you have eyes but are blind. If you don't study the Way in your prime, your habits and consciousness grow confused. If you don't study the Way in old age, you will face death with nothing but helplessness. If you are rich and noble but don't study the Way, you are falling into a pit of fire. If you are poor and lowly but don't study the Way, you are like a beast wandering aimlessly. How then could study ever be neglected? Strive on, strive on! Make this your rule and standard. There has never been a spontaneously born Shakyamuni or a naturally occurring Maitreya. Do not say that people today cannot match those of the past, and then abandon yourself, waste your life, and lose yourself in the realm of sensory pleasures and worldly pursuits.
