Chapter 5

The disciples, after receiving their instructions, each returned to their own rooms. They said to one another, "There is no need for us to quiet our minds and compose verses to present to the Master. The senior monk Shenxiu is our teacher of instruction. Once he attains the Dharma, we can naturally rely on him. There is no need to write verses." So they all put aside their efforts and none dared to present a verse.

At that time, in front of the Great Master's hall, there were three rooms with a corridor. Under this corridor, offerings were made, and it was planned to paint a depiction of the Laṅkāvatāra transformation, as well as a record of the Fifth Patriarch transmitting the robe and Dharma, which was passed down through later generations as a testimony. The painter Lu Zhen examined the wall and was to begin work the next day.
