> The official bowed and said, "Master, your teaching is truly profound and wondrous. I still have a small doubt I wish to ask you. I pray that with great compassion, you will explain it for me."

> The master said, "If you have doubts, simply ask. Why hesitate and ask again and again?"

> The official asked, "Is this teaching in accordance with the principles of Bodhidharma, the First Patriarch of the Western Lands?"

> The master replied, "Yes!"

> The official asked, "I have heard that when Bodhidharma taught Emperor Wu of Liang, the Emperor asked him, 'Throughout my life, I have built temples, practiced generosity, and made offerings—do I have any merit?' Bodhidharma replied, 'No merit at all.' The Emperor was disheartened and sent Bodhidharma out of his kingdom. I do not understand this statement—please, Master, explain it to me."

> The Sixth Patriarch said, "There is truly no merit in this. Do not doubt the words of Bodhidharma, sir. Emperor Wu was attached to a misguided path and did not recognize the true Dharma."

> The official asked, "Why is there no merit?"

> The monk said: "Building temples, giving alms, and making offerings are merely acts of cultivating merit. You cannot mistake merit for true virtue. True virtue lies in the Dharmakaya, not in the field of merit. The Dharmakaya naturally possesses virtue, and impartiality is the Buddha-nature. If you outwardly show respect but look down on others, and your self-centeredness remains unbroken, then you have no true virtue. The self-nature has no virtue, and the Dharmakaya has no virtue. When every thought walks the path of impartiality and honesty, virtue is not to be taken lightly. Always practice respect—cultivating the body is merit, and cultivating the mind is virtue. Virtue is created by the mind itself; merit and virtue are different. Emperor Wu did not understand the true principle—this is not a fault of the ancestral master."
