> The Master passed into cessation on the third day of the eighth month in the second year of the Xiantian era. On the eighth day of the seventh month, he called his disciples to bid them farewell. The Master had built a stupa at Guo'en Temple in Xinzhou in the first year of Xiantian, and in the seventh month of the second year, he took his leave. The Master said: "Come closer, all of you. By the eighth month, I will depart from this world. If any of you have doubts, ask now, and I will resolve them for you. I will help those who are lost to awaken fully and bring you peace. Once I am gone, there will be no one to guide you."

> When Fahai and the other monks heard this, they wept with sorrow. Only Shenhui remained unmoved, showing no grief. The Sixth Patriarch said, "Young monk Shenhui has attained a state where good and evil are seen as equal, and where praise or blame does not disturb him. The rest of you have not yet reached this. After all these years in the mountains, what path have you been cultivating? Why do you weep now? Who are you worrying about? Are you worried that I don't know where I am going? If I didn't know my destination, I would not say goodbye to you. Your tears show that you do not know where I am going. If you knew, you would not weep. The nature of reality is neither born nor destroyed, neither coming nor going."

> "Sit down, all of you. I will give you a verse on the true and the false, on movement and stillness. Memorize it and recite it. If you grasp its meaning, you will see that it agrees with mine. Practice according to it, and you will not lose the essence of our teaching."

> The assembly bows in reverence, requesting the Master to leave a verse, to be received and upheld with respect. The verse says:

> Nothing in the world is truly real, so do not view things as real. If you see something as real, that very seeing is not real. If you can find what is truly real within yourself, then by leaving the false behind, your mind becomes real. But if your own mind never leaves the false, where can you ever find what is real? Conscious beings move and react; unconscious things do not move at all. If you practice a motionless way of being, you become like an unconscious thing, utterly still. If you see that true stillness is not mere motionlessness—that within movement there is a stillness—then you understand that stillness itself is not just stillness, and that unconscious things have no seed of Buddhahood. To skillfully distinguish the characteristics of things while remaining unmoved in the highest truth—when you awaken to this understanding, that is the functioning of true reality. I tell all of you who study the Way: apply yourselves with real effort. Do not, within the gate of the Great Vehicle, cling to the limited wisdom that revolves around birth and death. When you meet someone whose understanding matches yours, then discuss the meaning of the Buddha's teaching together. If their understanding truly does not match, join your palms in respect and encourage them toward goodness. This teaching is fundamentally without dispute. If you argue, you lose the very meaning of the Way. Clinging stubbornly and arguing about the Dharma gates, your own true nature falls into birth and death.
