> Evening Meditation

> On the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, at the evening gathering. The Master said: "The Southern Dipper makes mischief, yet it is the Northern Dipper that becomes a spirit." Suddenly he picked up his staff and said: "A brand-new decree shows no human feeling; it strikes blind Gautama right in the eye. It makes the earth dark and the sky dim—who knows how to sigh and frown? Among you, is there a lion crouching on the ground? Come forward and show your claws and fangs. If not, this old monk will go and wipe away the grievance for you all." He planted his staff and said: "The dragon's sleeve brushes open, the whole body appears; where the elephant king walks, no fox tracks remain." Then he stepped down from the seat.

> The master addressed the assembly: "The pine is straight, the bramble is crooked; the swan is white, the crow is black. Right before your eyes they appear—have they ever been hidden? Whether you grasp it or not, the bright moon and the reed flowers can serve as your standard. Black and white are clearly distinguished—then tear it all apart, and in the school of Zen you become a barefaced thief. Thief, thief, thief, thief—at once, by the command of the sacred law!"

> Evening gathering. A monk had taken the name Jideng, "Gathering the Light." The Master said: "Tonight is the Lantern Festival. Every household is bright with lamps and candles. That is why you took this name. But it is not only you alone who should gather this light—everyone here in this assembly should gather this light. Yet this light has no beginning and no end. So why do we speak of 'gathering' it at all? It is only because all of you do not know where to let go of body and life, and so you miss the one step of liberation that all the patriarchs before us have taken. If you knew your own one step of liberation, you would also understand where the patriarchs let go of body and life. Then the single thread that a thousand sages have never transmitted—why would you need anyone to point it out? At all hours of the day and night, your own constant light is already shining before you. What is the point of talking about gathering or not gathering? If anyone in this assembly has the ability to demonstrate this, come forward and bear witness for everyone. If not, this old monk will gather this light for you." Suddenly he held up his staff and said: "Hand holding the night-bright talisman—how many know the dawn?" Then he struck the ground once and said: "Do you understand? If not, listen to this old monk's verse: Tonight the world makes merry at the Lantern Festival, while here in the mountains I am all the more alone. Who ever knew that a lamp is fire? The crown of the head owes nothing to those two strands of hair."

> Addressing the assembly, the Master said: "Whether or not you engage in practice, right now you simply need a clear path. To distinctly raise it up and let people understand—this is the very first step." He struck the ground once with his staff and said: "Do you know where to place your foot? Today this old monk will completely overturn the treasure-house of all Buddhas of the ten directions, things that people have never seen, and fully proclaim the tongue of all Buddhas of the ten directions, things that people have never been able to express. Among those here, is there anyone who understands? If you understand, you get thirty blows. If you don't understand, you get thirty blows. Don't say this old monk is unclear about reward and punishment." Then he left the seat.
