> The Master entered the monastery on the day of the Buddha's Enlightenment, during the year Xinwei in the thirtieth year of the Kangxi era.

> The Mountain Gate. "The mountain gate stands alone, guarding past and present—this matter knows no division between old and new. If you wish to recognize what is truly present right now..." He looked at the assembly and gave a shout: "Move one step closer, and you will see your true nature clearly."

> Buddha Hall: "The vast sky needs no measuring tools — You can't measure ocean water with a ladle. Let not a single speck of dust remain, and forget all forms and shapes — You will directly see the Tathagata, eternally radiating light."

> On that day, the Superintendent Zhiyue, along with several ladies who had sponsored a vegetarian feast, invited the Master to the hall. After lighting incense and making a prayer for the emperor's blessing, the Master held up a second stick of incense and said: "This pinch of incense has traveled through many schools and tasted countless hardships. In the end, I went up to Mount Tai three times, where I met an old, venomous master. In front of everyone, he tested me, pressing me until I nearly died and was brought back to life—a bitterness I can never forget. Now I burn it in the censer to offer to the great abbot of Renshou Hall, the thirty-third generation orthodox heir of the Linji school, the venerable Shangu Dalu, repaying the kindness of the Dharma's milk." The rector struck the sounding block and announced, "The dragon-elephant assembly of the Dharma feast should now contemplate the highest truth." An elderly woman asked, "Guanyin has a thousand hands and eyes—what is the Master's true eye?" The Master said, "Your eyes cannot see." She pressed on, "If there are eyes, why can't they see?" The Master replied, "Knock down the flagpole in front of the gate." The woman raised a fist, and the Master struck her. The rector Huishan Baowei asked, "Bodhidharma came from the West, leaving behind a single shoe—what is the meaning of his coming from the West?" The Master said, "A winter cicada sheds its shell, clinging to a bare branch and crying." Baowei asked further, "Where can one settle down and find peace?" The Master drove him out with a series of blows. The layman Xu Yuanzhi asked, "To raise one thing is to not raise another; if you let go of the first, you fall into the second." The Master said, "Molten rocks and flowing metal." Xu asked, "How about a hiding place with no trace, and no hiding place with no trace?" The Master said, "A duck-billed boat carries the pure wind on board." Xu said, "When one person returns to the source and realizes the truth, the entire universe vanishes. Yet many ancient awakened masters still saw the world existing—why is that?" The Master said, "I've told you this before you entered the monastery gates." Xu said, "In that case, we're just fooling each other." The Master struck him. Xu said, "What fault does this blow correct?" The Master said, "You don't even know pain or itch." Then the Master addressed the assembly: "To speak of worldly matters violates the truth; to speak of the truth violates worldly matters. You heal the sore on the skin, but cut out the flesh of the heart. Returning to the source is not two paths; skillful means have many gates. Seeing the moon, don't point at the finger; arriving home, stop asking the way. At this very point, we kill together and live together, die together and live together. Alone, raising an empty fist, I stride across the ocean. Without dwelling in the realms of form, I command the six periods of day and night. So, what about the phrase 'establishing a family and a country'? The days of Yao's blessings overflow with grace; the sun of Shun ever shines on countless people." He then gave a shout. The rector struck the concluding sounding block and announced, "Contemplate the Dharma King's Dharma—such is the Dharma King's Dharma." The Master descended from the seat.

> On the birthday of the Great Being, the Master ascended the hall. An old woman asked, "The Great Being Guanyin has thirty-two manifestations. Which one will you manifest today, Master?" The Master said, "Here, I have not a single manifestation." The woman pressed further, "If there is no manifestation, then what is this that ascends the hall and preaches the Dharma?" The Master replied, "When a lion bites, a dog chases after stones." A monk asked, "Once an old woman asked Master Deshan, 'The past mind cannot be obtained, the present mind cannot be obtained, the future mind cannot be obtained. Which mind will you point to, Venerable?' Deshan was silent. Today I ask you, Master—how would you answer?" The Master said, "Better to cut out my tongue than to break the emperor's taboo." Then the Master said, "Today, the boat of compassion ascends the hall to speak the Dharma on behalf of the Great Being, all to repay kindness and gratitude. But as I think of it, there is no Dharma to speak." After a long pause, he shouted once and said, "If you wish to avoid committing the boundless sin, do not slander the true Dharma wheel of the Tathagata."

> Lady Wu's mother is having a difficult birthday. I am invited to ascend the hall. "If we speak of this matter, originally there is no birth or death. Since there is no birth or death, why do we speak of Lady Wu's birthday today? Dense bamboo does not hinder the flowing water; tall mountains cannot obstruct floating white clouds. The pines and cypresses before the courtyard are always green—how fitting to point at Mount Sumeru and call it a longevity eyebrow."

> Concluding the retreat, the ladies requested a teaching. "When we speak of this matter, the Buddhas of the three times cannot pick it up, the patriarchs of successive generations cannot lift it, and the old masters of the world cannot reach it with their words. Today's Chan practitioners only vaguely grasp it with a hazy, indistinct mind. When they hear the board sound, they go to the hall for meals; when tired, they doze off." He struck the staff, saying: "An alert person simply takes it on directly. If so, a fish turning into a dragon can stir up waves. But if not, a beautifully embroidered piece, though pretty, gives forth no fragrance." He struck the staff again and descended from the seat.

> Mistress Shu wished to offer a substitute monk on behalf of her husband, and requested the master to ascend the hall. "According to the Buddha's teachings passed down through tradition, offering a substitute monk is a way of transferring merit. Patriarch after patriarch received it with reverence, passing it on from generation to generation. Now, the Junior Minister commands the novice Fo Chen to cut through the mountain of attachment, clearing away the path of delusion. Practice must be genuine practice; awakening must be true awakening." He gave a shout and said, "Walk forth, and all you encounter forms a forest of virtue. Lift up your eyebrows—do not lead yourself astray."

> On the day of the Master's birth, he ascended the hall and spoke: "Stop, stop, stop. At fifty, I understand destiny – such is this. The whole inherent nature is wondrous, brightly radiant; The path of practice begins from this moment onward. Free and unbound, whether in robes or lay life, This enables one to benefit both self and others as needed. The wisdom-eye atop the head shines throughout the cosmos; In fire, the udumbara flower blooms with purple pistils. Cauldrons of boiling water and blazing coals are all overturned; Sword trees and knife mountains are instantly destroyed. Suddenly, the golden-lock gate bursts open, And copper mountains are shattered to their foundations. Directly lift the essential teaching – no divergent streams; Face it directly, right here – this alone is it."
