> Autumn Mid-Autumn Outing to Tanzhe Temple with Friends (5 Poems)

> A refreshing breeze stirs the courtyard trees — Who shares this autumn mood with me? Thankfully, there are like-minded friends Who join me walking in these mountains. The cliffside rocks are slippery underfoot; We pluck red leaves from branches overhead. A mountain inn, the fragrance of village wine — A rustic bridge, fine rain that leads us on. The royal court lies just a short way off, Yet here the vastness clears all worldly dust. Living beings breathe and stir like horses; Our lives drift by like blowing tumbleweed. I stand on tiptoe beneath the sheer cliff wall — Proud and free, facing the long, strong wind.

> We laughed and talked with fellow pilgrims, asking each other, "Do you smell the tender fragrance of young trees?" Together we pointed toward the abbot's quarters, where a single lotus bloom floated on crystal-clear water. An elder monk joined us for tea—flowers seemed to fall from heaven onto our hemp-cushioned seats. Long ago, the late emperor came here on his travels; his jeweled throne still glimmers with glory. His brush and ink surpassed all ancient sages; jade scrolls unfurl like soaring dragons. As a humble official, I bowed in reverence, feeling as if I stood in the sacred palace halls. Sigh after sigh rose within me, yet my heart turned in the end toward the Empty King.

> How remarkable, this Master Yao In gold and purple robes, bright and grand. Old as he is, he still loves the hills— How many climbs has he made? Through summer heat on the river's waves, Enduring Mount Tai's winter snow. And now this lovely autumn day, The woods and valleys please him so. He stops his cart to turn and gaze, Where clouds pile peak on peak in haze. He asks for verses, words to teach, To calm the mind and quiet the reach. He'll pick chrysanthemums on a fine day, And come back for the red leaves' display.
