爾時，摩揭陀王斯尼耶頻毘娑羅為離車族所敗。而後，王集大軍破離車族。軍陣中歡喜「王破離車族」。時，大目犍連語諸比丘曰：「友！離車族破王，然而，於軍陣中歡喜王破離車族。」諸比丘譏嫌非難：「何以長老大目犍連如是言：『友！離車族破王，而軍陣中歡喜王破離車族。』耶？長老大目犍連亂言上人法。」以此事白世尊。〔世尊言：〕「諸比丘！最初王被離車族所破，而後王集大軍破離車族。諸比丘！目犍連言真實，目犍連不犯也。」

> At that time, King Seniya Bimbisara of Magadha was defeated by the Licchavi clan. Later, the king gathered a great army and defeated the Licchavi clan. In the army camp, there was rejoicing: "The king has defeated the Licchavi clan." Then the Venerable Maudgalyayana said to the monks: "Friends, the Licchavi clan defeated the king, yet in the army camp they rejoice that the king defeated the Licchavi clan." The monks criticized and reproached him: "Why does the elder Maudgalyayana say such a thing: 'Friends, the Licchavi clan defeated the king, yet in the army camp they rejoice that the king defeated the Licchavi clan'? The elder Maudgalyayana is speaking falsely, claiming superior human qualities." They reported this matter to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: "Monks, at first the king was defeated by the Licchavi clan, and later the king gathered a great army and defeated the Licchavi clan. Monks, Maudgalyayana spoke truthfully; Maudgalyayana is not at fault."
