> Revered Master Qixian

> Our school has ten disciplines, with those skilled in expounding the Dharma, understanding emptiness, possessing supernatural powers, and having vast learning—the so-called ten great disciples each have their own unique ability. Yet one who seeks to combine all these qualities fully is none other than our Buddha, hence he is called "The Capable and Benevolent One." The Confucian school also has four subjects—virtuous conduct, eloquence, governance, and literary achievement—and its ten disciples each excel in one area. Yet one who seeks to combine all these fully is none other than Confucius, hence he is called "The Ultimate Sage." Likewise, among the sons and successors of a family, some build the family fortune, some establish new enterprises, some preserve what has been accomplished, and some squander it all away. Yet one who seeks to carry on the ancestral will, complete unfinished tasks, continue the great enterprise, and lay the foundation for a hundred years for all under heaven is none other than King Wu. Alas! Our ancestral temple and our Dharma lineage likewise have never ceased to hope for the flourishing that King Wu brought to his people. The Qixian Monastery, the place where our predecessors established and propagated the Dharma, is also where the Tiantong and Jingshan lineages have passed down their lamp of wisdom. How could I forget the land of our ancestors, let it decay like withered grass, and sit idly by without a thought for it? Even though my younger brother, in these times of decline and unrest, may not be able to restore and revitalize it, he nevertheless has the resolve not to let it be squandered and can preserve it—this is one ability of a worthy disciple. As for me, the humble one, the retreat drum has long been sounded. In recent years, I have completed the work on the Ksitigarbha Tower, halls, and chambers, and also acquired a few acres of permanent land to avoid having to beg for food all day long. Perhaps I sleep soundly until the sun is three poles high, and ask the children what time it is—this is one ability of my wise withdrawal. But my younger brother should embody the will of our predecessors and steadfastly remain to uphold it, so that you may truly be called a loyal minister and filial son. Yet I do not know when we shall enter Chu to pay homage at the ancestral hall and converse together with all our brothers. What a wistful thought!
