> Master Yizong, whose Dharma name was Decheng, was born into the Fang family in Guangling. At the age of thirty, a neighbor falsely accused him of adultery. He castrated himself to prove his innocence, and then left Zhaoyang to take refuge under the venerable masters Taixu and Daodi. Later, he traveled widely to study, visiting Tiantai, South Sea, Shaoshi, and Wutai Mountains. Afterward, he crossed the Yangtze River and resided at White Cloud Temple on Taiping Mountain in Suzhou for three years. He then spent another three years at Gold Mountain Temple, where he served meals to monks in the Grand Enlightenment Hall. The prefect of Xiushui, a Mr. Zhong, requested that he reside at the Crane Forest Monastery, where he restored an ancient temple that had been abandoned for over a thousand years, bringing light back to its Dharma hall and kitchen. In the winter of the 17th year of the Wanli era, the master joined his palms and told the assembly, "Two people will come to see me today. Do not let them into my room, for I have no time today." Shortly after, two men arrived and were stopped at the door, where they knelt waiting. Suddenly, a song was heard: "The mud ox has just emerged from the sea, and the wooden horse neighs in the wind. To understand the meaning within, mountains and waters pile up again." After this song, the master sat upright and passed away.
