> Conduct and Deeds

> The master's monastic name was Haidong, his style was Fazhu, and his family name was Chen. His father was named Sangui, and his mother was of the Zhao family. They were from Shimen in Lizhou. At the age of twenty, both his parents passed away, and he abandoned his Confucian studies entirely. By twenty-five, reflecting on the difficulty of repaying his parents' kindness, he renounced secular life to become a monk. He went to Qixing Mountain in Cili to pay respects to the Venerable Changming Jiong, who shaved his head. He studied the "Three Not's" and received personal instruction for three years. He received full ordination under the Elder Yingshiu at Longshan, then followed Jiong to Mingshan in Yuanzhou, serving as his attendant for seven years. One day, Jiong asked, "One discerns the land from the sprout, and recognizes a person from their speech. But before the sprout has emerged, before the words are spoken—how then can one discern?" The master said, "I don't understand." Jiong said, "Do you truly not understand?" The master replied, "A single wheel of bright moon upon a thousand peaks, stringing together the past and present." Jiong said, "And yet you claim not to understand." The master bowed. Later, he followed Jiong to Pufeng Temple in Chenzhou. One day while sitting, Jiong asked, "What did Bodhidharma transmit when he came from the West?" The master said, "Meeting a venomous snake a thousand feet long on the path, its churning force grows ever higher beneath one's feet." Jiong said, "You still deserve a beating." The master flicked his sleeve and left. One evening later, hearing the wind stir the trees and the birds clamor, he suddenly penetrated this matter and spontaneously composed a verse: "The nostrils born of my mother are naturally long, Opened wide in an eight-character shape, nothing concealed. The wind's tone and the birds' cries are originally not different; Luminous and keen, utterly beyond discussion." Jiong said, "If you plug the nostrils and cut off the tongue, how will you breathe?" The master said, "Seven verticals and eight horizontals upon the crown of the head." Jiong said, "I spare you thirty blows." The master shook the air with a shout; Jiong also shouted. The master stepped forward and made a slapping gesture. Jiong said to the head monk, "This is the second master of Pufeng." After receiving personal instruction for over ten years, he later received the seal of approval. He went to reside at Golden Peak's Green Lotus Hermitage in Shaozhou. When the old master (Jiong) passed into stillness, he returned to Pufeng to handle the funeral arrangements. After completing them, he accepted the invitation to succeed to the abbacy. He led the assembly for twenty years, diligent day and night, instructing with earnest dedication. Monastics and laypeople from near and far revered him with sincere devotion. He upheld the true teaching and greatly propagated the ancestral way. Auspicious deer and majestic phoenixes flourished in abundance. The halls, pavilions, and monastic quarters all became magnificent sights. He had over a hundred sacred images consecrated and ensured all matters of the permanent community were fully provided for. At the age of fifty-six, he set his heart on springs and rocks, temporarily cutting through the entanglements. He handed the monastery affairs over to his Dharma-successor disciples to manage in rotation. From then on, his robe was at ease and his mind was free, enjoying the remainder of his years.
