> Dwelling in the Joyful Hermitage

> The furnace is lit for the meditation session. The Great Path transcends all partial views—it cannot be reached by the senses or the intellect. The mysterious pivot goes beyond all forms; how could ordinary reasoning grasp it? Even if one sees forms and claims to understand the mind, that is still mistaking a thief for one's own child. Even if one hears sounds and claims to realize the Way, that ultimately makes a servant into a master. Revealing the true and constant nature is not yet the state of utter purity, free from all defilement. The living function of the pivot, even if it turns freely, has already become a stuck shell, a sealed illusion. If one is truly exceptional, one will never fall into such traps. Thus it is said: "The final word alone reaches the fortress gate; once the vital pass is sealed, neither sages nor ordinary beings can pass." Even so, there is still one more aperture above. What is that aperture above? (HUAT! A sharp shout.) End of talk.

> Starting the retreat, a brief say. "All practitioners of Chan! To understand this great matter, the key lies in self-confidence and self-affirmation. With vigorous energy, cast away all that you have been habituated to, learned, accumulated, read in books, remembered in idle talk, heard from good teachers, and the four elements, five aggregates, six sense organs, six sense objects, light and darkness, form and emptiness, right and wrong, gain and loss—gather them all into one bundle and throw them into the vast ocean. Simply rely on your original meditation topic. In walking, standing, sitting, lying, turning, bowing, dressing, eating, defecating, and urinating—what is it ultimately? With unceasing diligence and unending thought, moment by moment press on to the very edge, and then strive for one final push. Ah! It turns out there is a living path to transcendence right under your feet. If one does not shoot the stone tiger at Lantian, who would know he is General Li?"

> Li Shan, raising the beam, a brief discourse. "The spiritual source is not obscured; countless ages shine forth its noble path. The true eye opens suddenly; the ten directions are completely illuminated. To the east, dragons roar and mist rises; to the west, tigers howl and wind stirs. But tell me, what is in the middle?" Suddenly striking the staff, he said: "Only serving one person makes heaven and earth noble; let all paths naturally share their authority." Then he raised the beam.

> A brief lesson for those who have left the world behind. Gathering the assembly, he said: "Good spiritual friends, is the homeland of your true nature at peace? If it is at peace, then it is the perfect time to eat meals of iron nails and chew on wooden splinters. If suddenly you should bite through your tongue, you will naturally find yourself serene and beyond all things. Then you may freely guide dragons and elephants of the great assembly, mold both saints and ordinary beings, be honored everywhere, and be master in every gate. Tell me, what is this phrase 'serene and beyond all things'? Though the city of Chang'an is bustling, my land remains tranquil."

> Small group instruction. "In former years, Master Bodhidharma placed a single sandal on the peak of White Cloud Mountain. For thousands of years, it endured wind and sun, rain and frost—yet no one recognized it. Today, I bring it out and hold it before your very eyes." Then, using his staff to make a lifting motion, he said, "Look, look! This is not made of leather, nor stitched from cloth. Is there anyone here who recognizes it? If not, I shall return to the West." With that, he stepped down from the seat.
