> Reply to Layman Fu Kegeng's Mocking Rhyme on One Hundred Poems of Plum Blossoms

> How wondrous is this flower, unchanging in any direction. Its fragrance surpasses the secluded orchid, its color outshines the light snow. Neither existing nor non-existing, like a jade tablet or a precious gem. Its essence remains unstained by dust, its potential flashes like lightning. Hearing it is true hearing, seeing it is not false seeing. The hearing of true hearing does not dwell in the middle. The seeing of false seeing finds beauty in every branch. Sometimes by the pine grove, sometimes standing by the water's edge. High or low, nothing is lacking. Withered or flourishing, utterly free from distinctions. It opens through mist and rain, reveals its rare splendor. In the human realm and the heavens, this alone stands unique. Whether praised or grasped, to define it is to miss it. Hard to conceal, yet even if revealed. Marvelous in a thousand words, it returns to the one. Cut my tangled vines, break your knotted heart. Once the heart-knot is broken, fragrance and purity arise. Extinction is not extinction, birth is no longer birth. In everything it appears, in all things it meets. Snow within snow, flower among flowers. Autumn can make it lean, spring can make it sprout. Summer can deepen it, winter can illuminate it. Illuminating this wondrous meaning, not one, not two. Tracing back before its birth, no hearing, no seeing. Branches, leaves, color, fragrance—empty across the great earth. On bamboo paths, by mountain windows, walking or sleeping. The wonder lies within, beyond thought.
