> Preface to the Recorded Sayings of Master Wash Heart Water

> All the people and events of this world seem to arise from a profound, spontaneous wonder—a natural mystery beyond human design. A place is blessed with talented people just as nature's craftsmanship can surpass human effort. What does it mean to be perfectly focused? It is simply samadhi, or deep meditative absorption. I have always walked the path of Confucian study, with shallow knowledge and narrow learning, utterly unable to penetrate the depths of Buddhist teachings. I had no idea how vast the ocean of Dharma truly was—what did it mean to "hold up a flower" or "raise a whisk"? Then one day, I heard people speak of a Chan master who, having studied both meditation and scripture, returned from Jiangsu and Zhejiang to ancient Bin County. The faithful community earnestly invited him, and he settled at Ruiyan Temple, which eventually became an ancestral monastery of the Chan lineage. I went to pay my respects. The master's demeanor was dignified and solemn, his expression respectful, and his words sincere. I was deeply moved and realized that what people said of him was true. I asked to read his recorded sayings, and they were like the autumn moon reflected in a clear pond—utterly free of any impurity. Or like the pure melody of a Tartar flute, unconstrained by the five musical modes—revealing the original family style of ancient masters and bringing fresh insight to the world. Each phrase spoke of the Chan lineage without being trapped in speech; each sentence enacted the Buddha's work without deliberate effort. He prescribed remedies according to illness, pulled out nails, and removed wedges \[from the mind's attachments\]. I felt my worldly dust instantly washed away, and my heart awakened with new faith. I realized that the Buddha's Dharma truly has a deep meaning, and it is people who remain stubbornly confused about it. Kneeling to read the text, I felt both joy and sorrow intertwined. With a sigh, I exclaimed: "Confucius said, 'Climbing the Eastern Mountain made him feel Lu was small; climbing Mount Tai made him feel the whole world was small.' How true these words are!" Ah! Unless you step into the snow, how would you know the fragrance of the plum blossom? Having heard this teaching, the wonder lies in the extraordinary path that transcends all categories. Does the single thread that runs through the Way really miss the center of the heavens? I am but an ant carrying a burden or a mosquito approaching a moth—how could I dare to beat a drum at the Thunder Gate? Even so, when a zither, lute, or harp meets a master's touch, even the trees in the forest and the ponds and swamps echo with the music of the Dharma. Perhaps virtue is never alone, and it always finds companions. Why is this? When meeting, one must face the truth directly and discern it before it is uttered; only when one has arrived does one know the mystery beyond all ordinary frameworks.
