> Volume 3 of Master Yi'an's True Suchness Record

> Preface by Junior Master Xu Zhang

> Small Instruction. "The pillar bears witness: 'Thus I have heard.'" A monk stepped forward and said, "You can't catch a toad's mouth." The master said, "A ladle of stinking filth thrown straight in your face." The monk said, "In the end, I will not let you down." The master said, "The pillar bears witness." A question: "Things have form and shape—short, long, wide, narrow, all up to the viewer. Principles have no appearance—how many blows should empty space receive?" The master said, "The scriptures have clear words." The monk said, "I am just like this." The master said, "The pillar bears witness." A question: "Who are those who have all come forth?" The master said, "They already have names." The monk said, "Who is the one who bears it?" The master said, "The pillar bears witness." A question: "If one does not tread on the positions of the thousand sages, where is that person?" The master said, "Blue light clouds, yellow light clouds." The monk said, "Thus I have heard." The master said, "The pillar bears witness."

> Dharma Talk: "There is this one matter that cannot be concealed." \*He gives a shout.\* "Leave behind these words and phrases, and discuss it in another way — yet the rare person who understands is seldom met."

> Small Instruction: "What kicks out from the tip of the toe, bumps and touches everything; what blazes in the flames and speaks everywhere, settles everything completely. Bumps and touches everything, settles everything completely—the three thousand worlds of oceans sink deep in the night, the ten directions of the universe are utterly empty and bare." He suddenly glanced at his attendant and said, "Quickly lock the monastery gate."

> Private Interview. Raindrops on the eaves fall, drip by drip: \*sulu sulu\*, \*shili shili\*. If you say it’s a secret — I’ve laid it all bare before you. If you say it’s hidden — it’s never come from anything distant. To speak so casually of this, and then claim you’ve understood deeply, is like wearing a cangue and then filing a complaint — it disgraces the ancestors. If you don’t get it this way, this mountain monk has nothing left to hold onto. But my nose is right here — I’ll pick it up and strike you straight on the head. With that, he picked up his staff and struck the ground twice.

> Small Group Interview. Question: "At this very moment, the Buddha and patriarchs haven't passed through here. Breaking down everything, how many stages must one advance?" Puning said, "I don't want to discuss this." The monk said, "I almost see it in this." Puning said, "Touch it and simply stop." Question: "What is the intimate phrase for teaching people?" Puning said, "The wind is fierce today." The monk said, "That's too absolute." Puning said, "How can you evade it?"

> Brief instruction. After a long pause, he said: "If it's not the ultimate truth, I won't explain it to you, Reverend." Patting his left knee, he said: "This here is easy." Patting his right knee, he said: "This here is difficult."

> Teaching Session: "Those who fall into the three lower realms deeply understand the true nature of sin and blessing. Great Master Ma of Jiangxi, Master Rang of Nanyue."

> Small Commentary. A monk asked Master Lingyan: "Is Master Chu resting well tonight?" Lingyan replied: "A stone tiger swallows the pine wind." The Master said: "Four mountains, a lone moon shines bright; a stone tiger swallows the pine wind. If you don't let go of the chance for insight, it's hard to make the path of words open."

> Building a fence, having a small meeting. "Like driving a stake into dry ground—right now, there's no way through. You can't pull it out or escape, and everything is all jumbled up." The monk hesitated to respond further. The master said, "You're definitely not going to break through. You're just tying yourself up with more ropes."

> \*\*Personal Instruction.\*\* "What is the Way that even a thousand sages cannot reach? What is the function that all things use without fail?" He struck his staff on the left and said: "When the tiger roars, the wind rises." He struck his staff on the right and said: "When clouds fly, lightning flashes." Then he laid his staff across his lap and said: "Thirty years from now, do not say this humble monk was just mixing mud and water."

> Short Discourse: "The clear breeze and bright moon pierce through the deep barrier — after all, what is the wondrous secret? Scattering horizontally or vertically is not the wondrous secret. Striking openly or in secret is not the wondrous secret. The one who always leaps beneath your straw sandals hardly needs mentioning, yet still, you need to be dulled and sharpened. A blazing flame passes through the blade's edge, lightning flashes in your eyes, a skull constantly chants — is this decided or not?"

> Evening consultation. A monk stepped forward, holding up the corner of his robe, and said: "Without falling into nets or entanglements, please, Master, speak directly." The master said: "Elder, don't be so impatient." The monk replied: "I know good from bad." The master laughed out loud. The monk asked: "In this noisy assembly, how many people have true insight?" The master picked up his staff and said: "I'm about to hit Shakyamuni right in the face." The monk said: "Do you even know good from bad?" The master again laughed out loud. The monk left, saying: "What kind of mind is this?" The master said: "You tell me." The monk replied: "I know good from bad." The master then laughed uproariously and said: "It's one thing for you to make me look dull, but you've gone too far in making me look foolish."

> A Dharma talk. The master asked a monk: "On top of a dung heap, a sudden phrase arises that encompasses all truths — speak it forth." One monk replied: "All belong to the master." Another said: "Zilin respectfully offers for the mountain hall's revision." Another said: "Suluohe Sa." The master said: "Deceived, even Mount Sumeru's nose grows long."

> \*\*Short Dharma Talk\*\* A monk asked: "When the patriarch's meaning is proclaimed without words, what is that like?" The Master replied: "The pure wind blows mightily." The monk said: "There's no need to deliberate, then." The Master said: "Carrying a single staff across your shoulder, where would you ask for traces or clues?" The monk asked: "In the brilliant light of the sun, who remains unawakened?" The Master said: "Have you picked up your nostrils yet?" The monk replied: "Then I'll lift Mount Sumeru." The Master immediately struck him.

> Small Teaching Session. "The clouds have cleared from the mountain peaks, the waves calm on the Xiao and Xiang rivers, and a broken boat quietly floats down to Yangzhou." On behalf: "Grasp the moment directly." Then said: "When you grasp the moment directly, wash your feet and go up. The crossroads stretch in all directions — how will you take up the main thread?" After a long pause, said: "Letting go or gathering in, neither causes harm. This very trace is worth carrying on."

> A monk asked Master Touzi: "When snow covers the reeds, what is that like?" Touzi replied: "Clear and boundless." The Master said: "The mountains and rivers are not your eyes."

> "Well, here in the Dragon Gate Hall," the master said after a long silence, "I am joining all of you today in studying with a true teacher of wisdom." Then he stepped down from his seat. The master held up his staff and said, "A true teacher of wisdom has arrived now. There should be one phrase suitable for the occasion." The crowd did not disperse, so the master brandished his staff and drove them away.

> Dharma Talk. In the urn resides the Great Compassionate Body— He made vows to end others' suffering. Even if sitting long turns to weariness, Speak one word that penetrates through. But I dare not hope for it with eager expectation. Speak a single phrase that lets no gap remain. No one answered. The Master answered in their stead: "With reverence, with reverence." He added: "A model for all times, past and present."

> Prayer for Clear Weather, A Dharma Discourse. (He strikes the staff on the ground.) "The long rain won't clear up—the answer is: The golden crow has flown up to the bell tower." (He strikes the staff again.) "Shedding the shell—a-clatter over thousands of miles, restless and vast."

> Personal Guidance: "If we're speaking of ultimate reality, under this patched robe, there's no room for you to pick apart threads and fibers. Brocade from Yizhou, silk from Yangzhou—they're spread out freely, no need for discussion. In winter, it's winter's cold; in summer, it's summer's heat. I've said it to you again and again, now you should understand the right timing."

> Small Teaching Session. The Master asked a monk: "All day long you're busy, yet 'that matter' doesn't trouble you. What is 'that matter'?" One monk replied: "When someone asks, I don't hide it." Another said: "The mind does not disappoint people." Yet another said: "I cannot avoid answering the Master." Another said: "Why are you pressing people so hard?" Another said: "Even coptis isn't really bitter." The last monk, however, just bowed and withdrew. The Master said: "None of them can find the truth. Let's wait three days and see."

> A small pointer: If one phrase can clear it all away, I will pluck out your eyebrows and swap your eyelashes. If suddenly a monk steps forward and shouts loudly, "HUM! HUM!" just say to him: "For slandering this sutra, such is the penalty."

> Instruction Session: "Everything remains as it is, and you are a person with nothing to do. The sun and moon of past and present, the mountains and rivers of past and present, the monk’s hall and the Buddha hall always face each other; green cypresses and tall pines glisten with cold dew. The bell rings as a bell, the drum sounds as a drum; within the ear holes, there is a mix of intensity and calm; upon the face, a blend of joy and sorrow—not a single thing is off by a hair." After a long pause, he said again: "What kind of pavilion or hall is this? If you can speak the phrase that lets all Buddhas extend their hands, I’ll let you move freely in all ten directions."

> \*\*Guidance for Q&A Practice\*\* "The matters of countless eons boil down to this very moment, right here, right now. With head touching heaven, feet planted on earth—beyond all contrivance. Eyes see forms, ears hear sounds. In every situation, no need to control or grasp. Naturally, the eternal light appears before you, towering a thousand fathoms." He took up the staff, struck it once, and said: "You must not dwell here. You must not sit here. You must genuinely operate at the tiger's mouth. You must settle on the venomous snake's head. Do not nail down the boat and shake the oar. Turn your head—there is another way of life." He struck the staff again.

> Small instruction: "If you wish to have realization in the present moment, do not cling to what is favorable or unfavorable." He lifts his staff and says: "This staff rides over the mountain gate, enters the Buddha hall. It bumps into Shakyamuni, knocks over Maitreya. The benevolent see it and call it benevolence, the wise see it and call it wisdom." He strikes once and says: "A thousand-year-old essence of blue jade transforms into bones of autumn water. Even the sea god cannot protect it; suddenly the tortoise head lifts it forth." He strikes two more times.

> One day, Master said, "The empty sky has no mouth—how can it speak? Wooden clogs have a mouth three feet two inches long." A monk stepped forward and said, "Isn't there still the master here?" Master replied, "Who do you say is listening?" The monk said, "No one else." So Master struck him.

> Short instruction: "The expressive demeanor illuminates the ancient path—there’s no need for discussion. Each of you, step down." The assembly stood dumbfounded. The Master said: "Homage to Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, homage to the Great Compassionate Bodhisattva."

> Evening Teaching in Autumn. "My mind is like the autumn moon, Clear and bright in a jade-green pool. Nothing in the world can compare to it— How can I even begin to describe it?" The master gave a shout and said: "All that myriad forms and appearances—in an instant, they lose their traces. If you can truly open one eye right here, then when you meet someone, you can shake off the dust from your head. Even if you laugh and curse Old Fenggan himself, he wouldn't blame you." He gave another shout and said: "Thief! Thief!"

> Instructional Talk. "Fishing in a clear pool—when will you break free? Pointing to the vast sky only captures its form. The brilliant light blazing above your crown, yet no one makes use of it. At this very moment, if you think you’ve found something, you’re still groping along fences and walls. To see without leaving your place, with eyes that perceive both humans and celestial beings." Then the teacher drew a circle with his whisk and said, "Follow my hand and look. If you hesitate, you won’t even need the lone ape’s cry—I guarantee you’ll end up utterly embarrassed."

> Dharma Talk. "After long rain, suddenly clears—revealing the eyes. Among the woods, the mud is slippery; from time to time, two or three calls arise."

> Small Group Teaching. A monk asked: "One phrase of True Suchness pierces through the skulls of everyone in the world—how many people have felt it?" The Master said: "That would be my fault." The monk said: "So all effort would be in vain." The Master said: "Try explaining it to the whole world." The monk asked: "Among thousands of people, in a crowd of hundreds, not favoring one person, not rejecting another—what kind of person is that?" The Master said: "Pay respectful homage to the ever-present Three Treasures." The monk said: "I have been a monk for thirty years." The Master said: "This matter isn't something to be taken lightly." Then the Master said: "There is a thing that existed before heaven and earth. It is not the carpenter's square of the Venerable Bao, nor the tailor's scissors of the Venerable Zhi. To truly understand it, neither you, monks, nor I, this mountain monk, have any part in it." One monk came forward, and the Master immediately stood up.

> \*\*Dharma Talk.\*\* "The hundred birds have not come, spring has passed again— Who knows the one dwelling in the hut?" Talking like this means you've gotten used to living a peaceful, uneventful life. But what happens when suddenly the sky tilts, the sun, moon, and stars all go dark at once—could you still speak such words then? If you want to reach a state where danger and safety are one, and stillness and activity are both forgotten... (The speaker picks up his staff and taps it.) "You must find an entrance right here." (He taps twice.) "I am not deceiving you."

> Teaching Pointer: "In general, a monastic practitioner should not only follow one single path. To fixate on one path is not a living path. If you find a path and then immediately start walking it, this also isn't a sign of true awakening. Still lingering around the edge of your sandals, hesitating and delaying, turning your head back and forth—the crows fly and the rabbits scurry on, time passes you by."

> Small Instruction: "The Dharma seal from the ancients is not obtained from others. If you simply go along with that, you'll be as far off as heaven from earth. The phrase that cannot be reached with all your effort—it's not from Henan, it's from Hebei. Chirp chirp—it's worn out my tongue!" He also said: "Worn out my tongue, made your mouth mute. Last night, a thousand feet of snow buried the cave; by the stone gate, several pine trees froze and snapped."

> Teaching Throughout the Streets and Neighborhoods, a Brief Dharma Talk. He lifted his staff and said: "The Dharma has no shortcut, yet the Path is not a lone and dangerous cliff. When you meet an understanding person, a single jab receives a single reply." He struck the staff once and continued: "How can so much emptiness bring about any reality? A thousand words all come down to one truth. By the butcher's block, every piece is choice meat; inside the funeral carriage, every sound is blood. Morning after evening, evening after morning, none of this can serve as a footnote for you all. If I wanted to speak to you of the way to peace and happiness, you are so busy right now that you have no leisure time."

> Small Instruction: To investigate, you must investigate free from mind, thought, and consciousness. To study, you must study beyond the paths of ordinary and sacred. In the morning, exchange greetings; when guests arrive, burn incense. The first stroke is short, the second stroke long. Suddenly throwing down his staff, he said: "The crimson phoenix soars into the sky on its own, while the cold crow still caws at the setting sun."

> Short Discourse. "The Buddhas of the Three Times \[past, present, future\] do not know 'existence,' yet the cats and cows do know it." \[He\] picks up his staff and says, "Look, look! The Buddhas of the Three Times have entered the company of the cats and cows! Why? Because these two different paths both lead back to the same ultimate truth."

> Dharma Discourse: The master looked left and right and said: "Dear brothers, did you really think the Tathāgata would grant you samadhi? Yesterday, you planted eggplants; today, you seed winter melons. With one cry of 'Hulu seed,' who will take the moon home? A cloud of golden light. After the discourse, have some tea and leave."

> Personal Instruction. How can you express what cannot be done? The mouth is below your feet. How can you do what cannot be expressed? Step on your tongue. Within all this, there is one point—try to determine it.

> Dharma Talk. Quote: "When Dongshan concluded the summer retreat, he addressed the assembly: 'As autumn begins and summer ends, brothers, whether you go east or west, you must go to a place where there is not a blade of grass for ten thousand miles.' After a long pause, he said: 'But just this—how does one go to such a place?' Shishuang heard this and remarked: 'The moment you step out the door, there is grass.' Taiyang Yan said: 'Even if you say you never step out the door, the grass is still everywhere.'" The Master said: "How amusing, how amusing! This bunch of men is rolling around in the grass head to toe—what records do they keep? Little do they realize that under each person's feet, the ground is utterly impartial, surpassing the present and transcending the past. If one were to act according to the decree, it would only be right to bury them all in a single pit."

> Short talk. The supreme path is not difficult - just avoid picking and choosing. Sweet melons are sweet through and through; bitter gourds are bitter to the root. Nanquan cut the cat with his own hand, Zhaozhou pointed to the cypress in the courtyard. A man from beyond the mountains sings the Partridge Song - misunderstanding it as a Tartar reed pipe. Eighteen Beats.\* (Two fierce shouts follow.)

> Ven. Master said: "The Supreme Way is not difficult—it only abhors picking and choosing. At the tip of every blade of grass, this old monk can hold it horizontally or hold it vertically. Amidst the bustling marketplace, the Son of Heaven is affected whether his eyes are open or shut. If suddenly an earthworm crawls through your ear canal, or a toad hops into your eye—now high, now low, occasionally joyful, occasionally angry—'If you do not return on your own, you can only find peace upon returning; amid the misty scenery of the Five Lakes, who is there to contend with you?'"

> Dharma Talk. "The Supreme Way is not difficult — only avoid picking and choosing. Above your head, the sky. Below your feet, the earth. Walk when you walk. Sit when you sit. Long hair, a monk's ugly face; shutting the door, afraid of the cold. One night's snow in the courtyard — the black pot becomes a white pot. Manjushri claps and laughs. Samantabhadra glares with angry eyes. Those without clarity in their eyes wander all their lives in poverty." Leaning on his staff, he says: "When they meet, all say it's good to leave office behind — yet who beneath the forest has ever seen a single one?"

> Short Dharma Talk. Tapping the staff once on the ground, the master said: "Seeing with your eyes, you don't recognize the Way; moving your feet, how could you know the path? Heavens! Heavens! Already it is unacceptable to just go on like this. If you still intend to take a step forward, it's like giving you three pounds of hemp and a bolt of cloth—what use would they be? Nevertheless, who would be willing to let you down?" He tapped the staff again on the ground.

> "Here's a small pointer: All day long you hold your alms bowl and eat your meals, never realizing how many ancestral masters you've swallowed along with the food—churning your insides into confusion. But if you understood the moment itself, one good release would settle everything. I'm not holding back my efforts either—here's a test for you." He then threw down his staff.

> Teaching Note: "All sages and saints attain realization through unconditioned truth, yet there are distinctions." He raised the whisk and said: "This is unconditioned truth—where is the distinction?" He struck the meditation bench and said: "One single boundless intent exists, yet some can hear it, and some cannot."

> A short discourse. "The entire great earth is a walking staff—which one is your true self? Su lu su lu. The entire great earth is your true self—which one is the walking staff? Hri hri. Are the walking staff and the true self the same or different? Su lu su lu hri hri. If you understand this, all wisdom and knowledge becomes pure, without duality or division, without distinction or difference. If you do not understand this, mountains and rivers block your eyes, and the walking staff pierces your nostrils. Don't say there is nothing to worry about."

> A Small Instruction. A monk asked, "What about before the lotus emerges from the water?" The master said, "Take care of yourself." "And after it emerges?" The master said, "Play with what's right in front of you." Another asked, "What about before the lotus emerges from the water?" The master said, "Mist and weeds stretch endlessly." "And after it emerges?" The master said, "Lake light settles in stillness." Then the master said: "Before the lotus emerges from the water, its radiance penetrates from the ancient beginning to the farthest end. After the lotus emerges from the water, its glow truly needs no eastern wind to carry it."

> Small Instruction: A monk asked, "When sitting upright, continuing the matter of the Western Heaven, does one still need to remember a single word, apply a single effort, blink an eye, or exhale a breath?" The Master said, "If Master Dongshan were here, he would surely burst out laughing." The monk pressed, "Why not offer a small skillful means?" The Master said, "How could you fathom its vast reach?" The monk gave a shout. The Master said, "Shallow." Then he said, "There are words and no words, like a vine leaning on a tree." Striking the staff, he said, "You reckless fellow, cut it off at the root, and you spare all the old masters under heaven from scrambling east and west. If you wait until the tree falls and the vine withers, then stop and rest—what's the use of that?" Again striking the staff, he said, "You reckless fellow."

> For this occasion, a brief Dharma talk. "The Buddhas have spoken without reaching the end—turning their bellies inside out, what stele records remain? The ancestors have walked without reaching the end—stumbling and bumping, when will there be a stopping point? Two lips above, a patch of earth below. Whether born from eggs, wombs, moisture, or spontaneously, who dares to alter even a hair's breadth of it? Just as one person awakens to the truth and returns to the source, the ten directions of empty space all vanish—where do these fellows plan to stand?" After a pause, he said: "Without long-term concerns, there will surely be near-term worries."

> A brief sermon. "The pure Dharma-eye illuminates the earth and shines upon the heavens; no need to carve the mind-seal, for flowers bloom in rich profusion. If one is utterly unattached, exhausting the present moment, and breaks through directly in the open, then the great earth melts like ice, sages and ordinary beings alike beg for their lives, and the single eye atop the head goes blind—even then, forcing the sun and moon to dim, heaven and earth to lose their color, is still not the full accomplishment of a monk. How much less so when one squints and pokes around in the scorching sun, or carves and chisels randomly on blank ground? For one who wishes to carry on the ancestral lineage and set a standard for past and present, how is this different from carving excrement into sandalwood or boiling sand into a fine meal? If such a person arrives here, let him sit in the back hall. Why? Wait until his nostrils are aligned, then slowly give him certification."

> A brief instruction. Here is the case: "Governor Lu Gen asked Nanquan, 'In my household, there is a piece of stone. Sometimes I sit on it, sometimes I lie on it. I'm thinking of carving it into a Buddha—would that be permissible?' Nanquan said, 'Yes.' Lu Gen asked, 'But isn't it impermissible?' Nanquan said, 'No.'" The teacher said, "Everyone says that old Nanquan was led around by the governor's heels—have they even had a dream of it? True Suchness has no lock on its mouth; I'll give you a convenient opening." Raising the whisk, he said, "Permissible and impermissible—strung together on one thread. > Instructions for a Private Interview: Raising an example: "Yongjia said: 'The Mani pearl is unknown to people, yet it is personally received within the Tathagata's treasury.'" The Master said: "How curious that Yongjia would take what belongs to everyone and claim it as his own. Since he says it's received, then who is the one who doesn't know it? True Suchness doesn't dare to be boxed up. I'll just pour it all out together!" Making a circle with his hand, he said: "All four forms of birth and six realms of existence are within one single light—yet the fool still asks about Maitreya."

> Small Dharma Talk. "If Shakyamuni had never appeared in this world, and Bodhidharma had never come West—at just such a moment, it would still be a fine time. But those later fellows, rushing about recklessly, each vying to hammer a peg into empty space. Either they lose the thread and fly off into the void, or they sprout branches where no branch belongs." He struck the staff and said, "Truly, if today we do not cut this vine at its very root, we cannot escape the tangles spreading across the world."

> Small guidance. He gave a shout, then said: "The myriad phenomena, sun, moon, and stars—all are contained within this. It is utterly filled and complete. Add a spark of fire without smoke, stoke the bellows without a bottom, and straightaway a blazing blaze fills the sky, streaming light spreads across the world. The Buddhas of the three times and the ancestral masters of all generations all manifest from within this. Beings in countless realms, all alike, rely on this light to attain perfect enlightenment at once. Even the worldly crafts and arts all operate right here. Now tell me—what does this matter mean for each of you?" He gave another shout and said: "The whole blaze awaits you entirely."

> A small instruction. Raising his walking staff, he said: "This fellow, twenty years ago, lost his home and scattered his household, ending up with no village ahead and no shop behind—the white moon above his staff, the green mountains beneath his feet. Who knows how many long pavilions and short pavilions he passed through? Now that he has arrived here today, has his heel yet touched the ground?" Then, leaning on the staff, he said: "In the empty pavilion, standing alone—to whom can this be told? Magpies chatter, crows call among the cypress trees."

When the aroma of the baked cake arises, offer it up as a tribute—not seeking to stand proudly beyond the world, but perhaps to serve as a mirror for those who come after. If everything is only about the present moment, would that not make Maitreya laugh until his chin falls off?"

The Master said, "Look, winter is coming to an end." "What is the Samadhi of Right Speech?" The Master said, "Then the spring wind arrives." Question: "What is the Patriarchs' Zen?" The Master said, "I do not wish to startle the assembly." "What is the Tathagata's Zen?" The Master said, "This mountain monk has landed on the ground." Then he cited: "An ancient worthy's verse says: 'I perform the Buddha's work, profound and wonderful indeed! In the empty mountains, no one; the water flows, and flowers bloom.'" The Master said, "Just right for buying straw sandals and going on a pilgrimage."

> Small Instruction. "If we speak in terms of ultimate truth, throughout the ten directions of the universe, not a single companion can be found—so where do heavens and humans, this one and that one, come from? Since you do not understand how to be careful from the start, you leave traces behind, and there is truly no path forward." > Small Instruction. A monk asked, "Words spoken are not the true meaning—who can say this is so?" The master said, "Spread open both hands." The monk continued, "Encountering it everywhere, how can that illustrate true emptiness?" The master said, "Set it down entirely." The monk pressed on, "If it is accomplished without effort, what dharma is this?" The master said, "What harm is there?" The monk said, "Dharma as it is, yet not as it is—both are merely lips and teeth." The master said, "That is not bad either." A monk asked, "When one uses the mind's eye to observe the forms outside the body, what is that like?" The master said, "The Parrot Islet before the Yellow Crane Tower." The monk said, "This is a true good teacher." The master said, "One who clings to words is lost." Then he said, "True fulfillment and decay, playing with spiritual transformations, entering all realms, entering Maitreya's tower, entering the pure wondrous land, entering the land of non-difference, entering the land of liberation—let all of you nod in agreement." He picked up his staff and said, "Holding fast the cosmos—what need is there to enter or act?" Then he drew a line and said, "Step across this line, and the ten directions' worlds are encompassed in an instant."

The Master said: "Picking locust blossoms, picking locust blossoms." Question: "What is the Buddha?" The Master said: "What a knife cannot cut." "What is the Dharma?" The Master said: "What fire cannot burn." "What is the Sangha?" The Master said: "What water cannot wet." Question: "If the whole earth is the indestructible true body, where do you go to relieve yourself between meals?" The Master said: "Don't blame the old monk for his lack of expedient means." The student pressed: "If the whole earth is the wondrous mind of nirvana, where does the six-fold cycle of rebirth come from?" The Master said: "Look at this donkey-headed fellow." Then he quoted the ancient saying: "The mind follows all circumstances; in that very turning, the essence is truly profound. Recognize your nature amid the flow—neither joy nor sorrow." The Master added: "Just go along with the crowd and eat your meals—even that will earn you a few coins for straw sandals."

Dropping the staff, he said: "Indeed, if you are truly a child of the golden-haired lion, you can discern the confusion from three thousand miles away."

> Small Talk. A monk asked: "When there is no Dharma before the eyes, yet the mind is set on what lies before them—what then?" The master said: "It pierces windows, passes through doors; it shakes the earth, rocks the heavens." The monk bowed and rose. The master said: "Stand over here." After a long silence, the master said: "No Dharma before the eyes, the mind set on what is before them. It pierces windows, passes through doors; it shakes the earth, rocks the heavens. Again he said: "In confusion, following your nature and moving about wildly, the tongue continuing on is also very difficult." Response: "Welcome, Manjushri." Then he said: "Having eaten your fill, you speak of True Thusness and Nirvana. Welcome, Manjushri. Is there still blood under your skin?" Response: "Twisting and turning, growing more confused." Again he said: "In the twelve hours, like a square peg in a round hole—is that still confusion?" Response: "It must come to this." Again he said: "What fault is there in east, west, south, and north?"

> Small Instruction. A monk asked: "That which pervades the universe and stirs heaven and earth—is it the substance of Suchness, or its function?" The Master said: "A fine question indeed." The monk asked: "When one flower blooms, a thousand petals surround it. The ancient Buddhas had no convenient means, and it is even beyond words. Please, Master, rescue the world's honored elders." The Master said: "Toil without reward." The monk said: "This is not yet the phrase that holds the universe in place." The Master said: "Leave it for later generations to critique."

The master said, "Not seeing your own self." The monk asked, "How does one advance on the ground of ultimate reality?" The master said, "The present moment leaves no one behind." The monk asked, "Standing east, then standing west—can we still meet?" The master said, "A stroke sends you a thousand miles away." Then the master said, "Truly, on this matter, if you chase after it and try to capture it, it will never be the same."

How much less when you talk in a flood of words, reckless and confused?” He suddenly picked up his staff and said: “All these groups—how much should they take?”
