The master ascended the hall. Pointing to the Dharma seat, he said: "This precious jeweled throne—from the founding ancestor Shakyamuni down through the generations of venerable elders—has been passed down from buddha to buddha, from patriarch to patriarch. Through it, the eye of humans and devas has been opened, and the ancestral lineage of our tradition has been established. Now that this old monk has arrived today, what is to be done? I will sit here, cutting off the very crown of all buddhas and patriarchs, with a thousand sages arrayed below." Then he ascended the seat.
Taking incense, he said: "This stick of incense, burned in the incense burner, is dedicated to wishing the Emperor a long life of ten thousand years upon ten thousand years. I humbly pray that he may govern with effortless grace, bringing all lands under his virtuous influence, pacifying conflict so that all nations come in tribute. This stick of incense is offered for the officials of the prefecture and county, the present protectors of the Dharma, and the virtuous elders of all mountains. I humbly pray that their noble nostrils may always smell the fragrance of osmanthus, and their clear eyes may immediately see the ripening of the fruit of enlightenment."
Taking incense from his robe, he said: "This stick of incense was planted on Mount Hu and cleansed in the Lan River. To smell it is to have nostrils reaching the heavens; to touch it is to experience joy throughout the whole body. For years it has been hidden in my bag, not daring to reveal it. Now, before the assembly of humans and devas, I freely take it and burn it in the incense burner, making an offering to the former Venerable Elder Yisou of Tongtian Hall, the thirty-second generation in the authentic Linji lineage of this temple, in gratitude for the Dharma nourishment." He adjusted his robe and sat down.
The head monk struck the gavel and said: "O dragons and elephants of the Dharma assembly, behold the supreme meaning!"
The master said: "For years hidden away, not revealing my edge, resting high in white clouds, companion to green pines. Today I'm pushed onto this jeweled throne, to uphold discipline and continue the ancestral wind. Is there anyone in the assembly who understands? Try coming forth to respond."
After a long pause, he said: "Open wide the eye of a thousand sages, turn the mechanism of ten thousand spirits. Sailing a boat on a snail's horn, racing a horse in a gnat's eye. The ten directions have no front or back; the four sides are utterly without obstruction. The whole body comes just like this; the whole body goes just like this. Naked and bare, exposed and free—nothing to grasp. A sharp fellow arriving here knows immediately: the lamp is the fire; wood is not apart from the wave. The great earth and I share the same root; the myriad things and I are one body. Why seek outwardly, looking for buddha, looking for Dharma, looking for Zen, looking for the Way, looking for spiritual powers, looking for wondrous function? To establish is up to me; to sweep away is up to me; to kill and give life is up to me; to let go and take hold is up to me. With function and mechanism present, no fixed rules remain. I am the Dharma King, at ease within the Dharma. Now tell me: What is the phrase for exercising authority from this very seat?"
He thumped his staff and said: "Holding Moye sword sideways, I execute the true command; across the peaceful world, I cut down ignorance and stubbornness."
He then brought up a case: "Luopu visited Jiashan. He did not bow, but stood facing him. Jiashan said, 'A chicken dwelling in a phoenix's nest—not of my kind. Get out!' Luopu said, 'I have come from afar, drawn by your wind. I beg you, Teacher, to receive me.' Jiashan said, 'Before me there is no you; here there is no old monk.' Luopu gave a shout. Jiashan said, 'Hold! Hold! Don't be so hasty. Clouds and moon are the same; streams and mountains are each distinct. Cutting off the tongues of everyone under heaven is not impossible, but how can you make a tongueless man understand speech?' Luopu was silent. Jiashan then hit him. From then on, Luopu submitted wholeheartedly."
The master said: "Had Luopu not met Jiashan, he would have almost wasted his entire life. Had Jiashan not gotten Luopu, it would have been a messy affair. Is there anyone who knows where Luopu landed? When the whale drinks the sea dry, the coral branches are revealed."
The head monk struck the concluding gavel and said: "Behold the Dharma of the Dharma King; the Dharma of the Dharma King is thus." The master then descended from the seat.
The master ascended the teaching seat and said:
"Before the Buddhas appeared in the world, before the Patriarch came from the West—nothing was complete, nothing was certain. But when the Buddhas appeared, when the Patriarch came—heaven was heaven, earth was earth.
At the temple gate, palms join in reverence; in the Dharma hall, meanings are explained. On the peak of Mount Sumeru, waves surge to the sky; in the heart of the great ocean, red dust rises.
Sailing a boat in the eye of a gnat, playing games in the socket of a crab. Whip the iron ox of Shanfu into motion, trample the turtle-nosed snake of South Mountain."
The master ascended the hall, pressed his staff and said, "This mountain monk yields not to Shakyamuni before, nor to Maitreya after. Linji and Deshan have nowhere to stand, and mouths are only fit to hang on the wall. Now tell me, what is so extraordinary about piercing the heavens that I speak like this?" He struck his staff and said, "Without the strength to lift a cauldron or uproot a mountain, even a thousand-mile steed is not easily ridden."
Withdrawing from the abbacy, I ascended the hall. "The ancestral seal is raised high, the banner pole stands tall; urged by my teacher's command, I continue the path to the heavens. One year's worth of past debts repaid—who can claim even half a day of leisure in this fleeting life? If even the Buddha did not cling to becoming a model, how can worldly attachments be allowed to entangle? Turning the black cane upside down, I turn and depart—a free man between heaven and earth. Assembly, tell me: at this very moment, what is it?" After a long pause, I said: "Today I walk alone beyond the cosmos, treading directly upon the crown of Vairocana." Then, taking my staff, I left.
