Praising the Ancients
靈雲見桃花。
Lingyun saw the peach blossoms.
頌云：「爛熳春光二月天，靈雲觸著眼皮穿。當時不得玄沙老，爭得佳聲亙古傳。」
The verse says: "In the brilliant spring light of the second month, Lingyun's eyes were pierced by a peach blossom. Had he not met the venerable Xuansha then, How could his name have echoed through the ages?"
陸亙大夫謂南泉曰：「肇法師也甚奇怪，解道天地與我同根，萬物與我一體。」泉指牡丹云：「大夫！時人見此一株花，如夢相似。」陸罔措。
Minister Lu Geng said to Nanquan, "Master Zhao was quite remarkable. He understood the principle that heaven and earth share the same root with me, and all things are one with me."
Nanquan pointed to a peony and said, "Minister! When people see this flower, it is as if they are dreaming."
Lu was at a loss.
頌云：「天地同根物不殊，了無形像可名模。南泉指出花如夢，彼一男兒我丈夫。」
The verse says: "Heaven and earth share the same root, all things are not different— No form or image can truly be named or modeled. Nanquan pointed out: 'Flowers are like a dream.' That one is a man, and I too am a man of worth."
大巔擯首座。
頌云：「春秋多少數難窮，百八輪珠暗裏通。夾岸桃花風雨後，馬蹄何處避殘紅。」
臨濟三頓痛棒。
頌云：「三度禹門遭點額，一朝觸著便稱尊。爪牙突露威獰甚，攪動山川海嶽昏。」
德山入門便棒。
頌云：「一條白棒劈頭來，萬里晴空絕點埃。凡聖都無伸屈處，木人拍掌舞三台。」
清淨行者不入涅槃，破戒比丘不入地獄。
頌云：「秦不管兮漢不收，腰纏跨鶴上揚州。有意氣時添意氣，不風流處也風流」。
南嶽云：「說似一物即不中。」
頌云：「什麼物兮恁麼來？陳年漆桶盡掀開，迥超物外無邊表，亙古磨今絕點埃。」
馬祖非心非佛。
頌云：「落落疏梅噴鼻香，任從來使報春陽。一枝橫亞青波上，惹得遊蜂上下忙。」
南泉云：「王老師自小養一頭水牯牛，擬向溪東牧，未免食他國王水草；擬向溪西牧，亦未免食他國王水草。不如隨分納些些，總不見得。」
頌云：「綠楊芳草共悠悠，直下分明那一頭。王稅多時已納了，普天匝地樂優游。」
南泉斬貓。
頌云：「赤手全提行正令，當軒孰敢犯鋒鋩？趙州縱有超方作，也是喪車挂藥囊。」
黃龍三關。
頌云：「我手何似佛手？者個阿誰沒有？翻覆慣調鴆羹，衲僧難以下口。」
「我腳何似驢腳，踏斷趙州略彴。嚇得南嶽天台，個個將頭暗縮。」
「人人有個生緣，饑飧渴飲困眠。玄沙不出鳶嶺，趙州親見南泉。」
僧問通天老和尚：「祖意教意，是同是別？」師云：「一箭過新羅。」僧擬議，師云：「劍去久矣。」
頌云：「祖意教意，魚目作珠，新羅一箭，者也之乎？不向佛祖行處行，是則名為大丈夫。」
