> Preface to the Record of Shared Precepts<note place="inline">Ghostwritten</note>

> The World-Honored Buddha established the threefold training of precepts, concentration, and wisdom. He taught people to collect the mind by upholding precepts, to enter meditative absorption through seated meditation, and to awaken insight that gives rise to wisdom. With precepts, one is free from greed; with concentration, one is free from anger; with wisdom, one is free from ignorance. Without greed, anger, and ignorance, there is no轮回 through the six realms. Without轮回, there is no birth and death. Without birth and death, one clearly sees the treasury of the true Dharma eye, becoming no different from the Buddha. This is why the Sixth Patriarch, while at Huangmei, presented his verse on formlessness and thus received the robe and bowl. Later in Nanhai, he met Master Yinzong at Fahsing Temple. Yinzong gathered many virtuous masters, shaved the Patriarch's head, and had him receive the full precepts from Vinaya Master Zhiguang. Master Zhun of Zhan Valley once visited Chan Master Cheng of Liang Mountain. Cheng asked, "You have yet to receive even the novice precepts—how dare you study the Buddha-vehicle?" Zhun clasped his hands and asked, "Is the precept platform itself the precepts?" Cheng was astonished. Zhun then said, "Even so, how could I dare not receive the precepts?" He then went to Vinaya Master Kangan and received the full precepts. From the beginning, no ancestral master has transmitted the Buddha-mind doctrine without having received the precepts. Some may ask, why did Bodhidharma not speak of precepts? This is because Bodhidharma was devoted only to direct transmission, enabling an immediate leap into the Thus Come One's realm. This was his approach, and speaking of precepts would have gone against it. But although he did not speak of precepts, he never encouraged anyone to destroy them. Let me ask: can beginning students all instantly leap into the Thus Come One's realm? If they cannot, then they must receive the precepts. Since this mountain monk took charge of Putuo Temple, many have sailed across the sea to seek the precepts. This shows that the good men and good women of today all understand the importance of the fundamentals. During the winter session, there were a total of several newly ordained precept recipients. I have instructed my attendant to record their names and have them printed to honor them. Even so, this is still merely a matter of cultivation along the path. My hope is that these good men and women will further engage in seated meditation to enter meditative absorption, awaken insight to give rise to wisdom, and ultimately clearly see the treasury of the true Dharma eye, becoming no different from the Buddha. Only then will it be complete.
