師二歲是年過嗣張氏葢張與師為王母族艱嗣息愛師岐嶷故乞繼承之。二年戊辰三年己巳

> When the master was two years old, his family name was changed to Zhang. This was because the Zhang family was related to the master through his grandmother; they had difficulty having children and found the master clever and promising, so they requested to adopt him. The following year was 1628, and the year after that was 1629.

師四歲甫離襁褓而氣度凝重殊無孩穉之意終日梱石間堆堆坐地若憶持者久之中冷涇成腫疾家人搗藥汁飲之稍愈而兀坐如故。四年庚午五年辛未

> At the age of four, just after being weaned from infancy, the Master already carried himself with a dignified composure, showing none of the childishness typical of a young child. He would spend entire days seated in a heap among the rocks, his body still, as if deeply absorbed in recollection. After a long while, he developed a cold condition in his system that led to swelling and illness; his family prepared medicinal juice for him to drink, which brought slight recovery, yet he continued sitting in stillness as before. This was in the fourth year, the year Gengwu, and the fifth year, Xinwei.

師六歲入鄉校不樂章句讀誦唯喜書遇便輒大書之畫𡑦不顧也嗣王父猒之然亦以是奇師。六年壬申

> At age six, the Master entered a village school. He did not enjoy memorizing texts and reciting classical passages. He only took pleasure in calligraphy—whenever he encountered written words, he would boldly write them in large characters, drawing strokes without restraint. The king’s father grew weary of him, but also regarded him as remarkable because of this. In the sixth year, the year of Ren Shen.
