### 鴛湖禪師語錄序

> Preface to the Recorded Sayings of Master Yuanhu

> I have heard that the ultimate truth is without words, and wondrous awakening cannot be transmitted. If this is so, then what is it that successive generations of patriarchs have transmitted to one another? And if it is said that there are no words, then why do we speak of the three vehicles and the seventeen hundred gongan? The truth is that within transmission, there is something that cannot be transmitted, and within words, there is something that cannot be expressed. I have often observed that my master, the Great Master Yuanhu of Lake Yuan, carries the legacy of Dragon Mountain and the Yellow Ox. He and Master Shiyu are fellow practitioners and kindred spirits. Master Shiyu received the Dharma from Yunmen, while my master inherited it from Nanming. They often exchange letters and verses, enjoying a deep friendship. In the spring of the year Gengchen, our region invited the master to serve as abbot of Puming Temple. Master Shiyu came from Xuefeng and joined the assembly to urge my master to ascend the hall and hold a ceremony. My master humbly declined, insisting he was ill. I then asked him, "Master, you are the Dharma-eye of a thousand sages, holding the supreme, ineffable truth. Why begrudge your eloquent speech and fail to guide people of all capacities?" My master replied, "There are times when a person should speak, and times when they should not. Fortunately, my friend Tianhua is here. Why should an old monk add unnecessary words?" He politely declined time and again, refusing three times. Only then, with no other choice, did he ascend the hall. The assembly of monks and laypeople gathered like clouds, and as they listened to his Dharma teachings, it was as if a great bell or a mighty chime had shattered the world's deep slumber, abruptly waking them, rousing them, and filling them with awe. None could help but admire my master's transcendent freedom from all sense objects and his supernatural power without limit. Every one of my master's shouts and blows is a golden needle awakening the world. A single phrase or brief verse is like the sound of a poison drum, and all who hear it, whether near or far, fall away. For those who do not fall away, a careful reading of this record reveals that each word is a true teaching, each phrase a wondrous truth, as if he were speaking face to face. This is indeed a collection made by his disciples. It is also the swift brilliance of my master's wisdom, awakening the world far and wide. Though it is said that the ultimate truth is without words and wondrous awakening cannot be transmitted, if one awakens through this record, then words ultimately return to the wordless, and what cannot be transmitted is fully transmitted. Ah, how sublime!
