四生、六道，蓋為此○不明，故有輪迴之相。汝幸生富貴之家，無衣食之逼，正好趁色力康健時，參究此道。但看未生董宅之時，這能語能言一點靈明在甚麼處安身？既生之後，能語能言復是何物？者裡看得破，念佛是誰不須問人矣。
The four kinds of birth and the six realms—it is because this is not understood that the appearances of cyclic existence arise. You are fortunate to have been born into a wealthy and noble family, free from the pressure of food and clothing; this is exactly the right time, while your vitality and health are still strong, to investigate this Path. Simply look at this: before you were born into the Dong household, where did that one bright spark of awareness—the one that can now speak and talk—take up its abode? After you were born, what is it that can speak and talk? If you can see through this point, then the question "Who is reciting the Buddha's name?" need not be asked of anyone else.
參究用工之法，不得放緩，緩則被散亂妄想混擾，難得成片，名為間斷。古云：「學道如鑽火，逢煙切莫休，直待金星現，歸家始到頭。」思之！
The method of investigating and applying effort must not be slackened. If you are slack, you will be mixed up and disturbed by scattered thoughts and deluded imaginings, and it will be hard to attain continuity—this is called interruption. The ancients said: "Learning the Path is like drilling for fire: when you see smoke, do not stop; wait until the golden sparks appear—only then, returning home, have you reached the end." Think on this!
人身難得，佛法難聞，世人匆匆，混過一生，向此門中，問道有幾？幸汝夙植善根，得遇善知識，發心參禪，求出世因，實難得耳。但要信得及，久久不退，定有相應分也。至囑！
A human birth is hard to attain, and the Buddha's teaching is hard to hear. People rush through life and let it slip by in confusion—among those who come to this gate, how many actually ask about the Path? Fortunately, you have planted wholesome roots in past lives, have met a good spiritual teacher, have resolved to practice Zen Meditation, and seek the cause of transcendence. This is truly rare. You need only have faith that carries you through, and persist without retreating over the long run—then you will surely come to a corresponding realization. Take this to heart!
掛鐘板，師擊板一下，云：「打破趙州關。」又擊一下，云：「擊碎雲門普，雪峰三輥毬，禾山四打鼓，普化掣風顛。面壁是魯祖。白蓮爐韝新開。大者歡欣小者舞。休歡舞。」復擊一擊云：「觀音妙智力，能救世間苦。」
The bell-board was hung. The Master struck the board once and said, "Breaking through Zhaozhou's gate." He struck it again and said, "Smashing Yunmen's universal [teaching], Xuefeng's three rolls of the ball, Heshan's four drumbeats, Puhua's wind-snatching madness. Facing the wall is Luzu. The White Lotus forge is newly opened. The great ones rejoice, the small ones dance. Cease your rejoicing and dancing." He struck once more and said, "Guanyin's wondrous wisdom-power can save the world from Suffering."
