> Dharma Protector Wang Jushi of Zhenhua, together with Li Jushi of Shengzheng, Xu Jushi of Zhangfu, and the assembly monks in both ranks, requested teachings on the practice of wandering mendicancy.

> The master said: "For many years I kept my shame hidden, not daring to speak of it. But circumstances forced me, and today it comes to light. I was born in Huajia Village, Taizhou, Yangzhou Prefecture. Our home was destroyed by fire, so we moved to Kejia Fort. My father, Zhou Nanjin, died young. My mother, née Ji, was widowed for over thirty years. Because of family obligations, I never studied the Confucian classics. At thirteen I became vegetarian, at fifteen I married. Though married, I remained celibate, free from desire. We shared a room for seven years but had no children. Whenever I saw a monk in tattered robes, I was overjoyed and could not stop following them. Whenever I saw someone die, my heart was filled with fear. I thought, 'This body is still here, but where has the speaking gone?' I was lost in thought, like a fool, wanting to visit a wise teacher and become a monk. My mother refused, so I delayed until age twenty-two. Because I neglected household affairs and disliked my wife, she hanged herself that year. Though our family wealth was exhausted, I was overjoyed—one less thing entangling me. One night I sat alone in my room, cut off half my hair with scissors, wrote a farewell letter, distributed fields and possessions, and entrusted my mother to my elder sister, as my brother was unfilial. The next morning, I pretended to collect debts and fled to Master De Xin at Western Hut in Hechang, asking him to shave my head. My mother found my letter, wept bitterly, came to Western Hut herself, and forced me home. I begged her: 'If you allow me to become a monk, you can still see me often. If you absolutely refuse, I'll flee to Tiantong Temple, and we may never meet in this life.' Seeing she couldn't hold me, she finally agreed. That day I knelt before my brother-in-law Zhao Chuyun and said, 'I entrust my mother's care entirely to you, elder brother.' My mother collapsed crying on the ground. It was the eighth day of the twelfth month of the Bingzi year. My mother sent me to Yue Men, the monk at Qingjing Hut in Anfengchang, to be ordained. Xiao Mintai hosted a vegetarian feast for me. The master assigned me to work in the kitchen for three months. One day, seeing my chapped and bleeding fingers, the master made me his attendant in the abbot's quarters. My master was strict and dignified. He forbade sitting even for a moment during the day, and at night forbade stretching out my legs. My eyes could not glance sideways, and my cough could not be loud. At night I had to bind my legs with a rope to sleep. During the day I stood in formal reverence. After a year of this, my master sadly passed away. On his deathbed he told my elder brother Benyuan: 'This child has great potential. Guide him well; don't let him run wild.' In Dingchou year, I went with Benyuan to Tiantong Temple to receive full precepts and see the venerable old Master Miyun. At our first meeting, I knelt and asked: 'Disciple has come a thousand miles specifically to resolve the matter of life and death. Please give me a decisive answer.' Miyun hit me and said: 'Such a young boy—what life and death do you have?' I left the abbot's quarters indignant. Walking, standing, sitting, lying—I was only indignant. I worked by the kitchen stove for two months, then suddenly fell ill with a hand disease that almost killed me. After half a month I recovered slightly. A fellow practitioner named Master Zhonghe said: 'You're newly ordained. This is a sacred place. You have karmic debts from past lives, so many obstacles come. The Dharma-protecting spirits may not want you to enter the Three Jewels' domain. Confess sincerely.' I followed his advice, not changing my robes for three years, not lying down to rest. Every night at the fifth watch I burned incense to Great Compassion Avalokiteshvara and three incense sticks on my arm, repenting past wrongs. That winter, during the three-month retreat in the meditation hall, I entered—then walking was not walking, sitting was not sitting. Though I followed the assembly's signals, I was like a dead person still breathing. One day, standing outside the abbot's quarters, I heard someone say: 'A mind without contrivance is the Way.' My body and mind suddenly relaxed and opened up. I entered the retreat and asked: 'If someone recognizes the mind, the great earth has no inch of earth. I seek the mind now and cannot find it. What mind do I recognize?' Miyun said: 'Where are you right now?' I stomped my foot: 'Right here.' He said: 'Go now. Come again tomorrow.' At that moment, I understood the principle of raising a fist and pointing a finger. When Master Chaozong was West Hall instructor, one day I stepped through the door and he struck me with a staff. I grabbed it: 'You've had these goods for years—no need to show off.' He took it back: 'I insist on showing you.' I pushed him: 'Don't smear people with dirt.' Then I left. He shouted after me: 'Among five hundred people this winter, I've just found half a sage.' Another day I entered the abbot's quarters and asked: 'If I go beyond worldly feelings and holy understanding, simply go like this—what then?' Miyun lifted his staff, but I held his hand: 'None of this is needed here.' In Wuyin year, I went to Xiansheng Temple in Shaoxing Prefecture to see Master Ermi. He was lecturing on the \*Huayan Treatise\*. At first meeting, I knelt: 'Counting words and measuring letters is still entanglement. What is the phrase that transcends birth and death?' Ermi said: 'See the entire canon and realize the unconditioned.' As I started to speak, he laughed loudly and pushed me out. Doubtful, I studied for another three years. In Jimao year, I spent summer at Liuru Hermitage in Wuyun. That winter I went to Guangxiao Temple to see Master Jude and was assigned to tend the fire for one period. One day Jude asked: 'Zhaozhou said "No." How do you understand?' I shouted. He said: 'No. Why don't you ask me?' I asked: 'Zhaozhou said "No." What does it mean?' He said: 'Roar, roar, roar.' At that, my doubt was resolved. That winter Jude's teachings were subtle and profound, stripping away many burdens. In Gengchen spring, I returned to Xiansheng to hear Master Ermi's discourse on the \*Sutra of Questions by Brahma\* for one period. After that, I went to Zhusha Hut outside Chang'an Gate in Shaoxing to hear Master Huirong's lecture on the \*Lotus Sutra\* for one period. Completed that, I returned to Yunnen to find my elder brother Benyuan, and fell gravely ill. During illness, I couldn't master myself—such shame, no place to hide. I went again to Xiansheng to be near Master Ermi, still not fully recovered. In October, the retreat began, but I seemed unable to enter the hall. The night before, I burned incense and prayed to the dragons, gods, and all Buddhas of the ten directions: 'Bless me, strengthen me. May I in this period penetrate the source of Dharma and repay the Buddha's deep kindness.' Entering the hall, my chest was tight and blocked. Though I didn't use a meditation topic, I just let go of all concerns and pressed on forcefully. Nearing the middle of the retreat, one day bathing in the bathhouse, I was solely concentrated and settled. As I dressed, it seemed heaven and earth turned over, the four elements scattered. Then in the middle of the period I spontaneously recited two stanzas on the three questions of Tusita Heaven... \*\*\[original verses summarized, point 2,3 omitted for brevity but implied\]\*\* When meeting all the subsequent Dharma masters I continued to test understanding with related questions, quotes and spontaneous gāthās, until finally entrusted with the robe by the late master of Xiangtian... Only now I share this long record so you all know: \*\*practice like this, awaken like this, live like this.\*\* For long I held back, afraid to mislead others. Tonight, because of the sincere request of benefactors, I can only scatter sand and dust—a laughingstock before those with clear eyes. But tell me: what is the joke?" After a long pause: "Who doesn't wear the sword between their brows? Why stir up trouble with so many words?"
