The Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Shanci Ji is a compilation of the teachings of the eminent late-Ming, early-Qing Linji Chan master Tongji, edited and arranged by his disciples Dazun, Daqian, and others. Completed in the early Qing dynasty, this work reflects the historical context of Chan development during the Ming-Qing transition. Its contents include the master's formal hall sermons, pointed dialogues, instructions to disciples, letters, and verses, collectively embodying his Chan thought and practical methods, which emphasize the Chan principle of illuminating the mind to see one's true nature and directly pointing to the human mind. As an important text of the Linji school, this record serves as a primary source for the study of Ming-Qing Chan history and Master Tongji's thought. It has exerted significant influence on the subsequent development of Chan learning and holds an indispensable position within Buddhist literature.
