### 復丁官徐居士

> Reply to Layman Xu of Ding Province

前蒙光顧，煥然餘輝未已，復承信物，何異錦上添花，不唯山埜致謝弗盡，抑亦令人讚誦無窮也。來教謂真佛出世，放光苦海，尤懷賞而不置者。然放光一事，不可獨推在山埜分上。秪如居士二六時中動轉施為、折旋俯仰，是個甚麼？若能回光一炤，則與真佛放光動地有何差別？與天下老和尚又何曾隔一絲毫？未審居士信得及否？如信得及，不妨塵中作主，濟物資生莫非廣大之佛事，庶不虛閻浮界上走一遭也。

> On a previous visit, your radiant presence left an afterglow that has not yet faded. Now, you have once again favored me with a token of your trust—an act that is akin to adding flowers to brocade. Not only does this humble mountain dweller feel an endless gratitude, but it also inspires ceaseless admiration. In your letter, you speak of the true Buddha manifesting and radiating light in the sea of suffering, which fills me with a profound appreciation that I cannot set aside. Yet, the matter of radiating light should not be attributed solely to this humble mountain monk. Consider, for example, all the daily movements, actions, and shifts of body of a layperson like yourself—what are they, really? If you could turn your radiance inward and reflect upon this, how would it differ from the true Buddha radiating light and shaking the earth? How would you be a single hair’s breadth away from the great ancient masters? I wonder, can you trust in this? If you can trust in it, then you can be the master amidst the dust and defilements, and all your acts of helping beings and nurturing life will be none other than the vast and great deeds of the Buddha. In this way, you will not have walked in vain through this Jambudvīpa world.
